Troubadour would have been appealing even if it were an instrumental album, on account of the delicious instrumental textures. Hey Baby charms the listener with its intricate guitar whilst Travelin' Light is a rhythmic up-tempo excursion with hypnotic percussion. One of the longest tracks is You Got Something, a yearning love song with brilliant instrumental interplay.
The romantic Ride Me High is a masterpiece of expressive guitar and percussion, the brief track Hold On is a slow bluesy interlude and then there's the original of Cocaine with its powerful rock guitar riffs which became a great hit for Eric Clapton. I'm A Gypsy Man has a nervous, jerky rhythmic pattern whilst The Woman That Got Away is an up-tempo blues track with ... Read More:

What I enjoy about this disk is that Ronnie has taken some tunes that he has recorded elsewhere and completely reworked them to an excellent affect. The playing is very crisp. His guitar seems to jump out at you.

I was hoping for a CD which exemplified the best of Jeff's style of wailing blues guitar and this collection of, mainly, cover versions did it for me. I think it is a great collection and love the interesting mix of songs. I love it so much I had to write a review.

I have the first 6 or 7 albums (on vinyl) by Robert Cray and I believe this is the one to buy first. Possibly the best known songs are the title track and 'Smoking Gun' but really they're all great, especially the first five tracks. He can definitely play but it's the singing and the song writing which come to the fore.

I heard Bad to the Bone on the radio whilst driving in USA and just had to buy some George Thorogood. Hearing the song again for the first time years reminded me of George's fantastic set during Live Aid in 1986. When I put it on in the car I just wondered how I had got by all these years without owning this masterpiece. It's a great mix of rock a blues, like ZZTop with attitude! Buy it, enjoy it and play it loud!

Possibly the definitive Cale album, though there are other contenders, 'Okie' sees him running through a varied range of approaches without putting a foot wrong. 'Crying' and 'Cajun Moon' are intense and brooding; 'I'll Be There' and 'Everlovin' Woman' are bright and jaunty; 'Anyway The Wind Blows' is earthy, hypnotic; 'Rock And Roll Records' is an outstanding, mid-paced number; 'Precious Memories' is a beer crate singalong country item. 'I Got The Same Old Blues' is the climax that speaks for itself. Like most of Cale's alums, 'Okie' weighs in at a little over half an hour, but its intimacy wastes nothing.

The master guitarist returned to what I feel is his best genre on this album, the blues - and nobody plays it quite like Gary. I'm appreciating these blues albums of Gary's more and more of late, other forms of music just don't seem to hit the spot. Keep 'em coming! I'd love one album and a tour every year...
Release Date June 02, 1997
A masterpiece as it has the capacity to satisfy many types of listener:
JJ Cale fans will enjoy the breadth of material
Casual fans will enjoy the consistent high quality of music
Newcomers are bound to be swayed by the fact that the music shows the influence or roots of many a popular artist's set - Dire Straits, Steely Dan, Clapton.

Many years had passed , more than 10 , I found myself in November 2006 in a crowded pub venue in Sheffield wondering how Walter Trout was faring ; remembering even longer back and John Mayall with yet another guitar man .
Some things pass all understanding ; let's just say that I enjoyed that gig, and not from nostalgia . It was as fresh as first hearing . Guitarists know what Trout is ; the wider public probably has heard of Clapton. Let's just say that sometimes he wishes he could play with the verve and optimism that Trout and Mayall still do , in little gigs , like young men , just because you have to , and it's who you are.
This CD is that good. Just a group of people playing the music as it comes , in one take . But what playing , and ... Read More:
