This arrived in the post today - loved it from the moment it started to spin.
The Man is and guest stars are in fine form although some are perhaps past the official sell-by dates they've developed character. Maturity suits the genre very well. A bit of croaking doesn't hurt it at all and some humour, mixes well. Mind you there is nothing too different about this album it treads a well worn B.B King path - and all the better for it in my opinion.

Sweet sweet music - enjoyable kick ass blues. Just buy it, and turn it up.

Considering his lack of mainstream profile it's quite amazing to recall that Monte Montgomery was named one of the top 50 all time greatest guitar players by Guitar Magazine. Even more amazing when you consider that he's an acoustic guitarist. Add in some excellent songs and singing, and you're left with a very special talent indeed.

His latest, self titled, album was recorded live in the studio and has 11 original, good to great songs, and a cover of the Jimi Hendrix tune, 'Little Wing'. The opening track. 'River' sets the bar high as he powers through a vibrant song before 'Let's Go' veers away from the Blues, heading off into seventies jazz rock before 'Everything About You' takes a turn into seventies west coast rock. There are few female blues singers making an impact today. Susan Tedeschi is not only a superb singer, she is a great guitarist too. Her music is original and inspired. This is a CD to keep in the car. And if you're a blues lover trying to find music your wife/girlfriend will like then you can't go wrong with this album.

"Laid back" probaby best describes this, but you might find that you need to listen 2 or 3 times before you get it. My first impression was not that good but I was alone in the car with her, and by the time I got back I was a fan. The only thing I can fault is her squeeky clean, all American "thank you" after some of the songs.

What can you say about this guitar legend...a true rocker, who plays the blues with rythm and soul. I love the fast Rock n rollers on this album like MTV and Outta control.

WT can mix rock and blues and unlike other players can hold it hold together tightly like the superb musician he is.. Keep writing, touring the uk and performing this stuff walter....you just have superb talent.

The Best of Ray Charles: the Atlantic Years

I would strongly recommend anybody to buy instead "The Definitive Ray Charles" as it is not only more complete (including '60 music recorded with another label) but because there are some fantastic tracks of the '50s missing here.
"Mess Around", "Leave my woman alone" "Don't let the sun catch you crying" are some of these, and (worse of all) a collection of Ray Charles cannot be called essential when "What'd I say" is present in its EDITED form (part 1)!
Moreover the sound quality of this CD "Atlantic Years" is nothing special, being a remaster of over 10 years ago. Again "The Definitive" is a much better compilation for quality and track selection.

1st we had Gun, then we had Three Man Army, then the Ginger Bakers Airforce drummer joined Baker Gurvitz Army, Logical I suppose! anyway this double CD is a brilliant introduction to the band and note has all tracks from their 3 albums. true 70`s rock. a brilliant trio, buy this and slip back and think to yourself, christ this band were amazing!

Amazon have done this set an injustice. The boxed set is superbly packaged (the image displayed is just part of the 3rd CD cover).

CD 1 covers 1952 to 1954, CD 2 1954 to 1957 and CD 3 1957 to 1959. Theres a nice accompanying booklet which gives full credit to all the known musicians and there is a substantial written history of Ray Charles time at Atlantic records which must runs into thousand of words. Jerry Wexler is quoted in these notes saying "In terms of purity and musical value, he cut his best sides for us. It was righteous roots music. It was intrinsically great music". So its no surprise that the music IS some of the best stuff Ray Charles ever did. A mixture of Rhythm and Blues, Jazz, Gospel and Blues that quite rightly is called the birth ... Read More:
