This is way extra cool music for our tortured souls & troubled minds. R.F. shines through these brilliant recordings of blues-based ballads with a heavy portion of gospel and a lil' touch of Mississippi mud. Relaxed-yet catchy melodies blend with more traditionally crafted blues, all served with passion, faith and respect. Foster shouts, wispers, screams, prays with the authority of very few. Some x-ellent musicians helped out (Gary Primich, Cyd Cassone, Lloyd Maines-among others). I'm happy to see this independent release in a large web store. Worths every penny.

This was the great mans favourite of his original albums, and was only released in Japan in the late 70's so has not been widely available before. It features a wide range of country blues & rock a la Buchanan, including the greatest ever version of Hey Joe, Hendrix does not even come close to the intensity of this.
My advice would be to get the compilations Millenium Collection (Polydor), Guitar on Fire (Atlantic) & De Luxe Edition (Alligator) to hear the best of this tortured genius, but this should be fourth on your list.
What we need now from Polydor is a compilation 2 CD live set from the 1973 Marquee recordings, the 1975 livestock concerts and these japanese sets. That really would set the world on fire. ... Read More:

Meet me at the bottom, bring me my running shoes. You can't keep still to this album. The sound is straight out of the 1950s, played on instruments from the time and sympathetically recorded to enhance that R'n'B atmosphere. This is rough, raw, and makes you want to get on the dance floor. It's also just fine in the car where you can boogie along nicely.
Think early Elvis, Elmore James, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry & James Brown. Throw in some Curtis Mayfield, a bit of Ray Charles and pound it out loud and proud. This is, to me, what Eric Clapton ought to sound like instead of the anaesthetic stuff he churned out with BB King.
If you like your R&B raw and living then this album is for you.

I am a huge fan of this mans music and could be regarded as a wee bit biased, almost being predisposed to like a new album before I've heard it. The downside being that expectations are already so high you don't get that wow factor. Except this album has it and then some. The last track alone is so breathetaking that had the rest been filler, I still wouldn't begrudge the purchase. Its not of course, the other tracks are wry, witty and toe tappingly good, your feet will move of their own accord, taking you to previously unvisited parts of your listening room,
Bias or no, the performances on this album are so powerful and full of life that I defy even a non-blues enthusiast not to be swayed by them.

Some critics believe most of Cray's material is well within his capabilities, but this album illustrates the quality of Robert Cray at his finest.
I saw the Cray band play in Manchester during the Some Rainy Morning tour, where two electrifying encores were played - 'I Was Warned' and 'Our Last Time,' both on this CD and as good today as they were in 92. The title track is well-chosen, arguably Cray's strongest track yet with a mellow, catchy riff, soulful lyric and crisp solo fitting so logically that you can't imagine a single note played differently.
Add to that excellent material like 'Just a Loser' and 'Won the Battle' and this is a superb album.
