I've had this CD for a month or so, and it has taken a few listenings to realise how fantastic it is. I found it not as immediately accessible as Little Axe's earlier work at first, but now I think it is the best thing Skip McDonald has done so far. Part of that comes from his collaborators - check out in particular "Go Away Devil" - an extraordinary fusion of blues and dub with Junior Delgado; and "All In The Same Boat" - lyrics and singing by Chris Difford (of Squeeze, for those of you old enough to remember). Pure poetry.

So, music fans, give it a few listens before making a judgement.

I was going to mention Clapton's christening of the Les Paul, Marshall setup, but others have beaten me to it. I liken it's impact to what happened to harp playing when Little Walter and other's deciding to blow through the PA or an early guitar amp. They REDEFINED the sound of the instrument.

So all I'll add is the rhetorical question...can you imagine being a teenage Brit, having been reared on the sounds of the Beatles, Jerry and the Pacemakers, or even the Dave Clark Five, wandering into a London club because someone had recommended the Bluesbreakers, and hearing THIS STUFF? If you are lucky enough to own this CD you will certainly not be having a Blue Xmas! The 16 tracks are all guaranteed to fill you with a really wonderful Christmas spirit. All the tracks are well known Christmas songs or carols ~ given the blues treatment. My favourite is We Three Kings, the track I first heard on Radio 2 and the one which made me decide to invest in the CD. An excellent album and well worth the wait till next Christmas so that I can play it again!!

While there were some people who recognized Bonnie's talent from the beginning, Bonnie had to wait almost twenty years after its release for her major breakthrough, during which time she gradually acquired more fans. So it was that this album, which remains one of Bonnie's best, has continued to sell steadily as all those new fans discover Bonnie's legacy. This album mixes blues, pop, rock and R+B - other influences came later - though blues is the main influence here.

Keep It Simple

After a disappointing 'Big Wide Grin' this album is a return to form, but it is getting a little formulaic. It has his usual Robert Johnson influenced playing and great vocals. This album has some great blues and is very laid back. Despite some of his earlier albums being a touch better this is still a great place to start if your new to Keb Mo, or even if you're new to blues.

Mick's Back

"Mick's Back" is Mick Abraham's third solo album after coming out of retirement. It may not be quite up to the level of his 1991 album, "All Said and Done", but it isn't far off. Released in July of 1996, this album features over 50 minutes of blues, with Mick playing the guitar better than ever. Mick is backed by The Norman Beaker Band, and the combination is dynamic. My personal favorites on this CD are "The Rivers Invitation", "Bad Feeling", "Time to Love", "Long Grey Mare", and "Yolanda", but all the selections are well worth a listen.
