I first saw RR&TFB on TV some time ago and completely forgot about them, only to browse around different genre's and stumble across one of their older albums. Then it clicked "what was that song? That was funky!". It was 'Ain't nothing wrong with that'. I had to get this album as I mentioned before I saw them on TV and they are absolutely awesome! If they're good enough for Eric Clapton.... Their sound is, to me, very funky blues with some gospel? Just seen the 'tags', yep, I'm right. It will make you tap your feet, nod your head and put some happiness, soul and that spring in your step. Brightens a cloudy day (mentally as well as meteorically). If you enjoy the blues then this is definitely for you. If you aint into the blues or you think you aint - give this a listen and you'll soon have a change of heart!
A great Cd from the big man himself, ideally showcasing his talents for producing some of the very best Chicago style blues. Magic Slim is long overdue the recognition he deserves from a wider audience and this Cd will go a long way towards achieving that.
Also check out the live Dvd release of the same name - this Cd and the Dvd are simply brilliant!

Old New Ballads Blues

I dislike the album title immensely, it conjures up visions of some compilation album such as his own Ballads & Blues but it is in fact another storming blues album. I still think that "Still Got The Blues" is his best album because I love the guitar tone and the production on that album, Gary to me should occupy that hinterland between rock and blues. Having said that though, I'm really growing to love his blues albums since After Hours. They have a grittiness and power behind them which is addictive. Nobody and I mean nobody plays guitar like Gary. His tone and his feel, coupled with those blistering runs up and down the neck really set him apart from the other axe heroes for me. Excellent album. I want it on CD because I fear for my vinyl and tape !!!!! copies. But be warned if you are looking for blues or rock alone this is not for you. Think 70s jazz fusion on guitar. Which is why I like it, as well as Back on the streets and the best arrangement of Dont Believe a Word, even though Lizzys version was excellent.

I bought the LP, of the Atlanta concert, in 1960. It knocked me out then, and it knocks me out now. For me, this IS Ray Charles. In the intro to 'Night Time is the Right Time' Ray says, '...and Miss Marjorie Hendricks will help out on vocals...', and boy, does she help out! Turn up the volume and strap yourself down.
