Look Forward to Failure

Whilst at uni some years ago, I went through a 'completist stage' and, upon hearing 'San Dimas...' on a compilation, bought their back catalog, which at the time consisted of this EP, plus a Split (with Useless Id) and 2 albums.

For me this EP stood head and shoulders above the other Ataris discs, not least for the stunning "Between You and Me", by far the strongest track they ever wrote and worth buying this EP for alone.

Since then 'End is Forever' and 'So Long Astoria' albums have been released - both of which are worth checking out - and whilst they show the improvement in the band's songwriting, playing and experience, "Look Forward to Failure" still remains their finest offering after half a decade.

Land of the Free?

If you are new to Pennywise, and buy this album then you'll probably love it. It contains everything that is great about the Wise - furious power chords, pounding drums and unbelievably catchy choruses.
However, if you buy any of Pennywise's other albums you'll soon realise that this isn't really anything special.
It opens with four great songs, but goes downhill from there.
With this album, Pennywise took their political views too far and it soon became boring. Everyone loves a political song, but not an album full of inane rants.
It is worth buying just for fantastic songs like 'Land of the Free?', 'The World' and 'Anyone Listening'. These three songs easily rank among Pennywise's all time greats.

I am an old Pennywise fan this is by far the gretaest of all Pennywise albums, defining their sound ever since. Pennywise invented crunching palm-muted speed-driven guitar with this album. Peaceful Day, Perfect people, Same old story, killing time or all unbelievable anthems and thats not detracting from the rest of the album. The first recorded version of Bro Hymn is also laid in as a secret track.

An American Paradox, simply a fine piece of work. Strung- Out have simply excelled themselves. The album consist of 13 tracks of which it sounds like their efforts have been put in to. This album gives a bigger insite into the minds of the band and represents a mature sound of what we know as a group of top class musicians. There is no complacency within the instrumental values of the songs as all of the lyrics sung and the instruments played all sound varied and i feel there is no track that sounds the same, they all are special. The best thing about the album is how it varies in tempo, however it doesnt lack the old strung-out style, its still there. Heavy, raw, loud, thrash-metal. This is typical Sick of it all and they manage to pull off 24 of their soul-squeezing tracks fairly successfully on this live CD. If you are looking for a typical "fat wreck" band, don't get into sick of it all. They are not punk or ska. NOT your average fat wreck band. Although a relatively impressive CD when first hearing it, I found it soon went to the bottom of my priority listening list. I have been more impressed by other sick of it all albums, so unless you are an avid fan I would advise against purchasing this album. Having said that I enjoyed the CD and do not regret purchasing it as it is fairly inexpensive.

The Future Is Medium

Compulsion are ridiculously underrated. They don't even have a website (last time I checked), yet as this record shows, they consistently write catchy and rocking punk songs. Clearly slightly influenced by a combination of Nirvana and the Kinks, their tunes are infectious and their lyrics are witty. They incorporate more ideas per song than probably any modern band that is comparable to them - Weezer for example, who's "Blue" album was a classic in it's own right. "Future is Medium" is better.

There are no bad songs on this record, but at least nine songs here are outstanding. It's one of those albums where if there is a bit in a song you don't like, it changes and reveals something you do like. So in effect, you can't actually dislike a song as they all contain ... Read More:

Dookie [VINYL]

It's the first time I've revisited this album for a while. I don't really think of myself as a Green Day fan anymore, but this was the first record of theirs that I heard. I then bought them all up to, and including Warning (which I thought was terrible). I won't be buying American Idiot.

So I just thought I'd peruse the reviews while listening to it; there's a lot of talk of punk, but I don't see anyone mentioning The Clash anywhere... or any of Green Day's predecessors. That really shows the generation that Green Day appealed to. I'm pretty sure I was 16 or 17 when this came out, and it became standard listening for myself and all my friends. I started my first band, and we would cover Basket Case and Welcome to Paradise. So it was pretty important.
