Before DIANA ROSS AND THE SUPREMES became the biggest female act on Motown in 1964, there were The Marvelettes who put Motown on the map by securing the labels first NO.1 hit with the classic, PLEASE MR.POSTMAN which has been re-recorded by several artists and groups most notably being THE BEATLES and THE CARPENTERS.
GLADYS HORTON was the lead vocalalist on most of their recordings including on the sprinkling of hits they enjoyed eratically through the 60's such as PLAYBOY, BEACHWOOD - 45789. From 1967 onwards WANDA RODGERS took over on lead vocals and the group enjoyed further hits with THE HUNTER GETS CAPTURED BY THE GAME and the divine WHEN YOU'RE YOUNG AND IN LOVE. All of these classic recordings can be found on this definitive ... Read More:

According to the liner notes, the Temptations line-up for both these albums was David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks and Otis Williams (tenor vocals), Paul Williams (baritone vocal) and Melvin Franklin (bass vocal), but by the time The Temptations Wish It Would Rain had come out in August 1968, David Ruffin had left the group and gone solo to Motown the month before. Dennis Edwards had already taken his place on stage and may be present on some of the more recent of these recordings. Mostly produced by Norman Whitfield, the album was to yield four singles in the US, the UK or both, including the memorable I Wish It Would Rain, the first Motown single to include sound effects and a US Top Five hit. It came out in December 1967, preceding the album by nine ... Read More:

An overlooked classic by Leon Ware that, if Berry Gordy had gotten his way, would have been the follow-up to Marvin Gaye's "I Want You". Having given away all of the tracks for his original solo album to make up "I Want You", Ware says that he was asked to let Gaye record the follow-up album but he refused. As punishment, the album was released on the more-obscure Gordy Records imprint and given little promotion. However, their loss is our gain.
This record oozes class, with instant smooth soul classics like "Learning How To Love You" and "Instant Love", beautiful soul-funk ballads like "Holiday" and a brilliant reworking of his own "Body Heat", earlier recorded for Quincy Jones' album of the same name. The sexual energy, lush production ... Read More:

In theory, Marvin and Tammi recorded three albums together, but Tammi was desperately ill and dying at the time the third album was being recorded, so for most of it, Tammi was replaced by Valerie Simpson, although it was Tammi's name that appeared on the album and the singles that came from it. So the two albums featured on this collection are the only albums that Marvin and Tammi recorded together.
The first album, United, yielded three American hit singles - Ain't no mountain high enough (top twenty), Your precious love (top five) and If I could build my world around you (top ten). In Britain, only the last of these charted and even then it was only a minor hit. There are plenty of other great duets here including a cover of Nancy and Frank Sinatra's ... Read More:

The first album featured here, MPG, was released in 1969 and the second, That's the way love is, was released in 1970.
The collection opens with Too busy thinking about my baby, a top five hit for Marvin in Britain and America. The follow-up single, That's the way love is, was atop ten American hit but missed the chart completely in Britain. How can I forget you became a minor American hit, but in Britain it was put on the B-side of Abraham Martin and John (my favorite Marvin Gaye song). The tribute to Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King and John F Kennedy gave Marvin a top ten UK hit, but it was Smokey Robinson and the Miracles who had the American hit with that song. From these two albums, there was one other minor American hit, The end of our road, which ... Read More:

Marvin respected his ex-wife enough to make a truly classic 'divorce settelemt' album.A heart felt epitaph to a doomed relationship.Marvin tries to rationalise the whole episode within this recording.I suspect drugs and fragile ego where the true root of Mr.Gaye's problems but to listen to 'when did I stop lovin' you........'is to get a true idea of the fragility of the man.A classic soul track!I really enjoy this album and I think it has got better with time,it has a number of really quality soulful tracks.I own it on vinyl and have now purchased it on CD.A masterful production with the only low point being 'Funky space' which is a somewhat pointless bit of obvious dance floor filling. Not a bad groove but way too long.Overall well worth five stars, this is Marvin's hidden ... Mary will be forever remembered for My guy, but there was much more to her music than that. This collection encapsulates the best of it. She was a very soulful singer, able to wring every ounce of emotion from a song.
Mary began he run of success in America with two minor pop hits, Bye bye baby (a song she wrote herself) and I don’t want to take a chance. These were followed by three top ten hits – The one who really loves you, You beat me to the punch and Two lovers (a song about a man with a split personality). More hits followed, but Mary did not reach the top ten again until My guy reached the very top of the American chart in 1964. It also became a huge hit in Britain, which missed out on the earlier hits because Motown was slow to catch on there. This was ... Read More:

Although the first four tracks on this set were not officially on the Tamla label, they were the first recorded at Berry Gordy's fledgling company. Starting with Marv Johnson, Gordy was building a company that would overshadow most of the majors of the day. This first box set in a series of twelve features quite a few gems that didn't make the charts, but it is in these first six discs that prove why Motown was the greatest independent record company ever. Obscure instrumentals such as "Snake Walk", "Continental Strut" and "Congo" help to round out the diversity of this collection. Barrett Strong's "Money", the Miracles' "Shop Around" and the Marvelettes' "Please Mr. Postman" is just the tip of the iceberg. Not only is every a-side included, but all b-sides as well. Several singles ... Read More:

Diana Ross had often been over-looked by critics as an important albums act which really is unjustified when you take into consideration the passion she conveys in her work which was always to a thorough high standard in the 1970's. Albums such as Diana Ross (1970), Surrender (1971),Lady Sings The Blues Origanal Motion Picture Soundtrack (1972), Touch Me In The Morning (1973), Diana Ross (1976) and Baby It's Me (1977) are pure examples of the quality and high standard of work she maintained in the 1970's. But ultimatley she came up with her most solid set at the end of the decade in 1979 with the fabulous, The Boss album.
Ashford and Simpson always knew how to make great records for Diana Ross and you could argue that they were the most fully-formed productions Diana ever worked ... Read More:
