Much has been written about the original release and I share the view that it truly is one of the great albums; transcending both time and genre.
What the reviews here fail to mention are the treasures to be found within the live recording from The Kennedy Center. Close listening to this concert reveals moments of utter beauty. The slowed moments referred to by other reviewers enhance the depth of feeling and this can be felt too in the reactions of the audience who respond rapturously to Gaye's heartfelt improvisations, backed perfectly by some wonderful playing by the supporting musicians. The recording may indeed lack the polish of the studio release but its extremes of intensity and subtlety in performance showcase a true genius at ... By the beginning of the eighties, Motown's glory days were long past, yet they were still able to score some big hits. Unfortunately for Motown, there were many more misses and minor hits than big hits as this compilation shows.
Being with you (Smokey Robinson) and One day in your life (Michael Jackson) both made number one in the UK, while Endless love (Diana Ross and Lionel Richie) made number one in America and also made the top ten in the UK. I'm coming out (Diana Ross) made the UK top twenty, but the remaining tracks made little, if any, impact in the UK charts.
Of course, just because they weren't big hits doesn't make them bad records - indeed, many of them are excellent. It's always good to hear the Commodores, Syreeta ... Read More:

The group had been around since the fifties, but it was only after they joined Motown that they became successful.
The first album, simply titled Four Tops, yielded three American hits –Baby I need your loving, Without the one you love and Ask the lonely. All three singles were released in the UK but none charted. The Fourmost covered Baby I need your loving and had a British hit with it.
The next album, with the equally unoriginal title Second Album, also yielded three American hits, but they were much bigger hits. The album opens with I can’t help myself, which topped the charts and provided them with their first British hit. The lyrics are slightly silly but the song has an irresistible, infectious beat. It’s ... Read More:

If you have not listened to Marvin Gaye before - this compilation is an excellent place to start! The price is a real steal. It might well happen that before long you have this CD in your player as a regular companion you would be sad to miss.
Release Date January 22, 2007
Marvin Gaye enjoyed his parallel career as a duettist with Motown's favoured ladies, and enjoyed commercial success with each, but was always ultimately unlucky with his vocal partners. First, Mary Wells left the label for Twentieth Century Fox, then Kim Weston left with husband-producer Mickey Stevenson to sign to MGM, and finally Tammi Terrell collapsed in his arms onstage with a fatal brain tumour, at which point he pledged never to pair up again.
Mary Wells' sudden departure caused seismic waves at Motown. It is well known that some new songs she had recorded were reassigned to other singers, notably a reluctant Brenda Holloway, but it now appears that in May 1964 work had also begun on another record with Marvin Gaye. The evidence is the ... Read More:

Before DIANA ROSS AND THE SUPREMES became the biggest female act on Motown in 1964, there were The Marvelettes who put Motown on the map by securing the labels first NO.1 hit with the classic, PLEASE MR.POSTMAN which has been re-recorded by several artists and groups most notably being THE BEATLES and THE CARPENTERS.
GLADYS HORTON was the lead vocalalist on most of their recordings including on the sprinkling of hits they enjoyed eratically through the 60's such as PLAYBOY, BEACHWOOD - 45789. From 1967 onwards WANDA RODGERS took over on lead vocals and the group enjoyed further hits with THE HUNTER GETS CAPTURED BY THE GAME and the divine WHEN YOU'RE YOUNG AND IN LOVE. All of these classic recordings can be found on this definitive compilation ... Read More:

Edwin Starr was picked up via the Ric Tic label which Motown acquired-probably to shut them up as they were copying them profusely.
This CD takes in the year before Starr's charttopper-WAR and his subsequent move to England.
Here he made a series of hits like HAPPY Radio

Mary will be forever remembered for My guy, but there was much more to her music than that. This collection encapsulates the best of it. She was a very soulful singer, able to wring every ounce of emotion from a song.
Mary began he run of success in America with two minor pop hits, Bye bye baby (a song she wrote herself) and I don’t want to take a chance. These were followed by three top ten hits – The one who really loves you, You beat me to the punch and Two lovers (a song about a man with a split personality). More hits followed, but Mary did not reach the top ten again until My guy reached the very top of the American chart in 1964. It also became a huge hit in Britain, which missed out on the earlier hits because Motown was slow to ... Read More:
