I'd heard a half hour segment of David Ruffin material on the old motown show that used to be on a certain radio station that has now very much sold itself to commercialism (yes you know who that it is!). Anyway loved what I heard and so decided to source a best of album and this was the album I brought. Loved it so much I've now brought most of his other albums.
If you love soulful happy soul then this albums for you. No other voice can compare to the late great Mr David Ruffin

This ranks as one of the best sound-tracks ever, accurately pin-pointing the time and musical culture against which the action of the film is set, offering an amazing diversity of musical styles--soul, R & B, flower-power lyrical mysticism and Top 10 pop. One caveat: the CD has not and never has included the track which so memorably opens the film and should open this CD and that is The Stones' "You Can't Always Get What You Want". Another good reason to buy the DVD, if one more was needed.

Marvin respected his ex-wife enough to make a truly classic 'divorce settelemt' album.A heart felt epitaph to a doomed relationship.Marvin tries to rationalise the whole episode within this recording.I suspect drugs and fragile ego where the true root of Mr.Gaye's problems but to listen to 'when did I stop lovin' you........'is to get a true idea of the fragility of the man.A classic soul track!I really enjoy this album and I think it has got better with time,it has a number of really quality soulful tracks.I own it on vinyl and have now purchased it on CD.A masterful production with the only low point being 'Funky space' which is a somewhat pointless bit of obvious dance floor filling. Not a bad groove but way too long.Overall well worth five ... Marvin Gaye enjoyed his parallel career as a duettist with Motown's favoured ladies, and enjoyed commercial success with each, but was always ultimately unlucky with his vocal partners. First, Mary Wells left the label for Twentieth Century Fox, then Kim Weston left with husband-producer Mickey Stevenson to sign to MGM, and finally Tammi Terrell collapsed in his arms onstage with a fatal brain tumour, at which point he pledged never to pair up again.
Mary Wells' sudden departure caused seismic waves at Motown. It is well known that some new songs she had recorded were reassigned to other singers, notably a reluctant Brenda Holloway, but it now appears that in May 1964 work had also begun on another record with Marvin Gaye. The evidence ... Read More:

The first of the two albums here, On top from 1966, includes two American hits, the first of which was Shake me wake me when it’s over. The second, Loving you is sweeter than ever, also charted in Britain. The album also includes a cover of the Beatles classic, Michelle, and a couple of songs from the Great American Songbook – In the still of the night (a Cole Porter song that was a huge hit for Tommy Dorsey in 1937) and Quiet night of quiet stars – which are most impressive. The remainder of this album is made up of obscure but excellent songs written by Motown’s own songwriters.
The second album, Reach out from 1967 contains six major international hit singles (they all charted at least top twenty in Britain as well ... Read More:

Before DIANA ROSS AND THE SUPREMES became the biggest female act on Motown in 1964, there were The Marvelettes who put Motown on the map by securing the labels first NO.1 hit with the classic, PLEASE MR.POSTMAN which has been re-recorded by several artists and groups most notably being THE BEATLES and THE CARPENTERS.
GLADYS HORTON was the lead vocalalist on most of their recordings including on the sprinkling of hits they enjoyed eratically through the 60's such as PLAYBOY, BEACHWOOD - 45789. From 1967 onwards WANDA RODGERS took over on lead vocals and the group enjoyed further hits with THE HUNTER GETS CAPTURED BY THE GAME and the divine WHEN YOU'RE YOUNG AND IN LOVE. All of these classic recordings can be found on this definitive compilation ... Read More:

Motown artists produced a lot of Christmas albums over the years and this one culls the best of the tracks from a number of them. The arrangements are for the most part simpler and more classic than the pop hits that arrived factory like form the industy.
This collection features some outstanding, and probably rare gems notably Smokey Robinson's beautiful Christmas Lullaby, a live track from Marvin Gaye ~ The Christmas Song, a great soul track from the incredibly underrated Kim Weston ( a voice second only to the great Florence Ballard),Stevie Wonder's cabaret Everyone's a Kid at Christmastime, and for me the greatest surprise closes the album is Marvin Gaye's rewriting of Little Darlin as Purple Snowflakes.
Like many compilations this one is a bit ... Read More:
