well-assembled box set containing just some of Motown's most golden and definitive classics. Nobody knew Motown Records was going to take off in the way it did. Berry Gordy intended to use his artists to break down the then racial barriers, intending to encapsulate a golden and distinct sound that would not only please a black audience but would too appeal to whites. Berry Gordys visions for the company paid off. Key artists like Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder attracted a huge following from both blacks and whites.
Seemingly echoing the restrictions of ghetto life in Detroit (which is where Motown began) was the effective, bluesey Money (Thats What I Want) by Barret Strong, Motowns debut release. There ... Read More:

Motown albums in the sixties were often filled with covers of motown hits and a few singles. In the hands of Norman Whitfield however the temptations produced original music, which makes them essential purchases for tempts fans. But never did they get it so right as they did on this album. Every song has something different than the usual; whether it is the performance of the singers or the ambitious arrangements of the songs. There are a number of ballads perfectly placed alonside some more uptempo songs and the album flows. This is a band on top form with one of the most talented producers of all time and any sixties soul fan must try to get this in their collection. Lastly, it is worth getting this album on its own as the two-for-one set which ... Read More:

Meet The Temptations and The Temptations Sing Smokey were the first two albums to be released by the Temptations, and were released in April 1964 and February 1965 (both 1965 in the UK). Their first single as the Temptations had come out on Motown's Miracle label in 1961, but their first Top Twenty hit had been seventh single The Way You Do The Things You Do/Just Let Me Know early in 1964, presumably triggering the putting together of Meet The Temptations.
Meet The Temptations was entirely assembled from their previous singles. The earliest included was their second single for Miracle, Check Yourself/Your Wonderful Love back in 1961. Also included is third single Dream Come True/Isn't She Pretty (the first release on the new Gordy label ... Read More:

The Supremes were a brilliant group but there was plenty of sadness behind the scenes. Florence Ballard was the original lead singer. Several singles were released without success, after which Diana Ross replaced Florence as lead singer. Songwriters Holland-Dozier-Holland were brought in at the same time and nobody will ever know which change was the more significant. Florence eventually left the Supremes, to be replaced by Cindy Birdsong. Diana Ross left to go solo in 1970, at which point this compilation ends.
The Supremes had just one British number one hit (Baby love) but they had many number ones in the American pop charts. Many of those were also top ten hits in Britain, but even those that weren't became famous anyway - however, this is not ... Read More:

Over the years one of soul music's great mysterys has been the existence of the Four Tops debut album for Motown Records, on their very rare Workshop Jazz label. For years collectors have speculated on sightings but it seems their has been more chance of finding bigfoot than this album. Recorded initially when the group was first signed from Chess Records, the proposed album was to be called "Breaking Through". There were also pictures of the cover on early Motown inner record sleeves. With poor sales, the Workshop Jazz label was soon dissolved in early 1964,it was at around this time that the group were collabrating with the famous Motown song writing team of Holland-Dozier-Holland. With their first single together becoming a big hit (Baby I Need You're ... Read More:
