This one followed Volume 3 to the top of the UK Album chart. It was tucked between Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin in October 1970.

The hits were coming thick and fast for Tamla Motown. Wheras Vol 3 was nearly half re-releases, there was only one on here. The Four Tops' anthemic 'I Can't Help Myself', finally got UK justice with a top ten placing. Their version of Jimmy Webb's 'Do What You Gotta Do' made number 11. Motown and Jimmy had a win-win relationship. His first song writing royalty cheque came from a song he wrote on The Supremes' 1965 Christmas album.

Not exactly 'Classic Soul Hits'. A better name would be 'Some classic soul hits and a load of over-produced re-recordings of classic soul hits.' But that wouldn't have fitted on the cover.
It's a shame I didn't know this before I bought it. If you think you're getting the originals, think again. A few originals are thrown in but the 2006 versions of the other tracks are not worth listening to as they sound contrived and a poor imitation of the originals. Also, some of the songs just go on and on and are excrutiatingly painful to listen to.
I think the 2CD set 'Gold' will be a better purchase than this badly packaged thrown together waste of space. The sound quality is good though and that's what the 1 star is for.

Gladys Knight and the Pips made some records before they signed to Motown, but those records were not successful, so these are the earliest important recordings.

I heard it through the grapevine was their first major hit, going to number two in the American pop chart (and topping the R+B chart) and also giving them a minor British hit. Gladys recorded the song at around the same time as Marvin Gaye, but Motown originally selected the version by Gladys and the Pips for single release. Marvin’s version was released as a single a year later and topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic. The two versions are very different despite both being produced by Norman Whitfield. After the runaway success of Volume 1, which made No 2 on the album chart, this Volume 2 followed less than a year later.

Volume 2 did not sell as well, but still made No 8. In spite of the growing popularity of Motown in Britain, and more airplay due to Radio 1 pumping out of millions of transistor radios, this one contained less British hits than Volume 1. I think that is because they songs were chosen from a shorter period than the first one.

My favorite here is Diana Ross & The Supremes 'Reflections', a fine tamborine driven masterpiece. Simple on one level, but there is a lot going on in there. The writers and producers at Motown knew how to get the best out of their artists.

The Ultimate Christmas Collection

Side two of this cd has almost worn out because it's played so many times over the Christmas period. From the classic White Christmas by Bing Crosby to Driving Home For Christmas it's just brilliant from beginning to end. If this cd doesn't get you in the festive spirit, nothing will.

I disagree with the previous reviewer, these book sets are marvelous. I have several and keep them with my Vinyl (Yes I still keep Vinyl). If you want a CD Box set, there is an alternative version from Motown, with an identicle track listing. This book set is the same price but includes a lavish hard back book with a wealth of information & history.

The music is what counts and the music here is consistently excellent and is an comprehensive history of the artist that is Stevie Wonder - Highly Recommended

Diana

Diana Ross had not had a big UK hit since 'Love Hangover' in 1976 when this album was recorded. I love it, because it's the album that introduced me to the music of Diana Ross and in time many other Motown legends.
This is not a typical Diana Ross album as there are no traditional ballads. Instead we get a succession of cool grooves from Chic's Edwards and Rogers with Diana's sumptious vocals over the top. Apart from the obvious charms of 'Upside Down' and 'I'm Coming Out' the outstanding tracks are 'Now That You're Gone' and 'Tenderness' (a minor hit in 1981).
This album is equally loved and loathed by Ross fans but whatever your opinion it shows Diana as a serious album artist rather than a singer of hit singles. The deluxe version allows you to compare ... Read More:

Motown's valuable Lost And Found series has been handed over to Hip-O-Select, who have expanded the format to double-CD sets, in this case featuring the ten-year tenure with the Gordy label of the fabulous Martha and the Vandellas (latterly Martha Reeves and the Vandellas). An unfortunate side-effect of this for UK customers is that the releases are somewhat harder to find, especially since Hip-O-Select seem not to export directly to here, and often pricey. They are, however, well worth tracking down.
