We have been seduced and captivated by the sensational duets by Tammi Terrell and Marvin Gaye. Sadly, Tammi by herself does not live up to the magic of those. A pleasant album, but with nothing outstanding and marred by her tendency to slide around the true note, rather than hitting it. An album best left for the devotee.

I was lucky enough to see ES live twice in my lifetime. Once at a scooter rally in the 80s, and once, a year or so before his untimely parting from us, in Peterborough.
I saw him perform at the Cresset Centre in Peterborough along with Freda Payne and Martha Reeves on the "dancing in the street" tour. No disrespect to Freda or Martha (they were brilliant), but it was Edwin's show. It was an all-seater venue, but as soon as we'd heard the first few bars of "stop her on sight" there wasn't a flat seat in the house!
A more unassuming man you couldn't wish to meet - despite his immense talent. He shook hands with us all after the show and seemed genuinely surprised at our adulation. The man was pure class and a true gentleman. ... Read More:

Motown in the sixties were famous for a particular sound that had it's roots in R+B, but had all the rough edges polished off. Junior Walker (unlike their other stars) was allowed to record in his own way (very raw R+B), although he was eventually persuaded to record some mellow soul music, more typical of the Motown sound.
On this compilation, you get examples of Junior's raw sound (tracks like Shotgun and I'm a road runner) and his more mellow sound (particularly What does it take to win your love) as well as his versions of Motown classics (How sweet it is and Come see about me) which serve to emphasise his different style compared to the other Motown acts.
Junior was a saxophonist who ended up singing as well, but he's not a great ... Read More:

When The Jackson 5 started out, they literally fired out the hits in rapid succession. All of these favourites from the Motown years are here on Disc 1. I’ll Be There is a particularly outstanding track. Also here is early solo material from Michael, including the sublime Got To Be There On Disc 2 they have transformed into the Jacksons and this covers their recordings for the Epic label. By this stage their music had become very ‘Disco-fied’. Less of the tracks on Disc 2 were actual hits but this is still a comprehensive collection of their out put from this era. Best of the later tracks are Can you Feel It- a fantastic upbeat celebrational disco hymn, and also State Of Shock which sees Michael in a duet with Mick Jagger in raw, ... Read More:

Amazing how much stuff the TM labels recorded and then dumped in the vaults! Were they doing it for a bet?.
Fortunately the CD Age came about and there was no reason to keep so much stuff hidden.
But their logics are more difficult to comprehend. They sign up a 9 year old girl Lisa Lewis whose mother was one of the Lewis Sisters.I mean great to revive the idea of the Hot Boppin' Girl but why not run with it?
TM were into signing up ex band singers like Billy Eckstine and Connie Haines. They signed up Sammy Davis Jr and they even signed up Pat Boone who cut 2 albums for their Melody sub.
Obviously aimed at collectors but so much here is better than some of what became the hits to my mind

You have to like Diana Ross to appreciate this compilation. She was so hot on our charts in 1974, as a solo artist, as a duet partner of Marvin Gaye and with a re-release of an old Supremes classic. They broke the unwritten Chartbuster rule, with her singing lead on consecutive tracks, numbers 9 and 10.
Also re-released was Jimmy Ruffin's 'What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted', which accounts for this volume having 17 tracks, as it had also been on Volume 1 in 1967. It was so big in 1974, they couldn't have left it off, so it is sort of a bonus track. 'There's A Ghost In My House' from R Dean Taylor was also huge in '74 following Northern Soul action. This was about the last time that a Motown record got on our charts that way.

For those of you who prefer Diana's music from the beginning of the seventies onwards this is one of the best compilations around. Although Motown have now put out Diana Ross and The Supremes 40 Greatest, it confuses the buyer as we tend to think it's just that, Diana with The Supreme's. The truth is the latter half of it is Diana at her best in the early 70's. This compilation feature's hits from the 70's leading into the 80's and show's a number of sides to Diana's music. The ballads and blues are covered by the sublime "Endless Love" and "Goodmorning Heartache", "Touch Me In The Morning", and "Theme From Mahogany". But what comes out great in this album for me is the "funky" side to Diana. The brilliant "My Old Piano", hear the piano and guitar playing ... Read More:

Marvin's spoken intro to the title track sums up the purpose of this set. Made to fund his divorce from Anna Gordy, Gaye had originally planned a quickly recorded album, low on quality, to spite his one time muse, since the judge had written the order into the divorce settlement. The original critical response to "Here My Dear" seemed to reinforce that view, as Gaye's popularity waned spectacularly in the late 70's. Indeed, it had been an incredible fall from the heights of the "What's Going On" era.
Marvin Gaye's problems with his public persona have been well documented by David Ritz, his friend and biographer. It was Ritz who identified the 2 sides of Marvins' personality and it was Ritz who persuaded him to return to performing in 1982. In doing so, ... Read More:

Smokey Robinson was once described by Bob Dylan as "the greatest living poet". That is certainly nothing of an understatement and Smokey Robinson was one of the most richly talented singer/songwriter/producers at Tamla Motown Records.
Smokey Robinson gave Berry Gordy the initial ammunition for forming Tamla Motown Records and was also partly responsible for bringing the great Diana Ross to his attention, who was a close friend of Smokey's and indeed Smokey ended up having a short-lived affair with Diana, even though he was married to Claudette Robinson at the time. Berry Gordy expressed an interest in one of his songs and before long, a creative bond was forged that would change the face of music between blacks and whites.
