Having seen the show live and falling instantly in love with it I could not wait to buy the Ultimate DVD. Although the DVD was different to the live show I had seen it is still great and gave me access to great stars such as Elaine Page, Sir John Mills and Jason Gardner to name a few. So it was with eager anticipation that I ordered the soundtrack for me and my daughters to listen to in the car. We expected the soundtracks to be the same as our much loved show and DVD - THIS IS NOT THE CASE. Some of the soundtracks are sung by other people and the standard is no where near the standard recieved on the DVD - the only exception being Memories by Elaine Page. We were personally horrified by one of our favourites Mungojerri and Rumpleteazer where ... Read More:

I got this CD for my boyfriend for Christmas last year, and he absolutely loves it!
Both of us are Tim Burton and "Nightmare Before Christmas" fans, so of course it wasn't long before I borrowed it for myself.
The first disc is basically the original soundtrack, so if you already have the standard version then you'll already know what tracks are there and how great it is to listen to. A wonderful addition is that the soundtrack has actually been re-mastered, so the music is clearer, and still a delight to hear.
The second disc is where it gets interesting. The first four tracks are songs from the delightful movie performed by well known artists. Here's the basic rundown.
"This is Halloween", performed by Marilyn Manson: ... Read More:

I recently was given a ticket to see an amateur production of this musical at the Shaw Theatre in London, and was really expecting the worst-west end/broadway show tunes belting out! How wrong I was-the overture and first 5 or so songs are sung as a passage that is incredibly moving, and really captures the excitement, glamour and hopes of the maiden voyage. The styles of musical are unusual, some of which sound like beautiful hymns, and much of it is sung by large groups, and sung powerfully. I love this cast recording, and although the Broadway show must have been incredibly spectacular with the hydraulic stages and huge cast, the music stands alone. Love it!

Inspired by I Fagiolini's breathtaking live show, this film brings to life Monteverdi's madrigals of love and loss. It begins in a restaurant, where the buzz of conversation is soon pierced by a woman's anguished cry as her partner says he wants to break up. Gradually we realise that the same story is being played out at different tables. Flashbacks show how the couples all arrived separately at this crisis. The music expresses their conflicting emotions with an overwhelming intensity, and the singing and sound quality are superb.

I have owned this recording on vinyl since the 70s and was glad to finally update to CD. I agree with the other reviewers, adding only that while Gillan's Jesus is outstanding (rivalled only by Steve Balsamo in recent years), it's Murray Head's Judas that is the exceptional vocal performance, and never really bettered by any since.
PS: If you're considering the latest cast recording featuring Steve Balsamo, one of the highlights is Alice Cooper's Herod. Priceless!

My mum has been a big Lanza fan since the 50's and has amassed all his recordings on vinyl and then CD and his films on VHS over the years. However, I was able to buy this DVD for her from amazon.com last year when it was first released in the US. She was absolutely delighted! The quality is excellent - both picture and sound. Unfortunately this DVD is the only GENUINE studio released DVD of any of Lanza's films available at the time I write this (26 June 2008). Apparantly the Great Caruso is being planned for a proper studio DVD release in the US some time soon but there are still no firm dates. BEWARE...all the other Lanza DVD's (of Caruso, Student Prince etc) which you see currently advertised on the internet, eBay etc are NOT official studio DVD releases ... Read More:

I've been a fan of G&S most of my life and enjoy listening to the Savoy operas almost as much as starring in them.
The Mikado has been a favourite of mine since I first heard it and when I heard this Swinging adaptation I was blown away! Its a brilliant reworking of the classic opera, retaining the feel of the original, but with an modern upbeat twist. The melodies are just as catchy and you'll probably find yourself singing along and snapping your fingers.
This CD will appeal to anyone who likes G&S, opera, musicals, or just damn good Jazz. At this price, its worth it!

We all learned long ago to be leery of remakes of beloved classic (Marlo Thomas doing "It's A Wonderful Life" sticks out for me), but every once in a while you find a gem like "The Wiz," which successfully treads upon the most sacred ground of "The Wizard of Oz." What makes this Tony Award winning musical with music & lyrics by Charlie Smalls and a book by William F. Brown, is that its best musical moments do not duplicate those of the classic film, with the exception that proves the rule of "Ease on Down the Road" as the contemporary counterpart to "We're Off to See the Wizard." The finest moments in this stage musical are when Dorothy convinces one of her companions "Be A Lion," when the Wicked Witch (Mable King) warns "Don't Nobody Bring Me No Bad News," and Glinda ...
