This is a really good album with lots of really good songs. Most of them older, since the album first came out in the 80's. Elaine Pages voice is spectacular and this is a complete collection of her early, good stages.

Oliver (1960 London Cast)

For me there is only one recording of Oliver that works and this is it. I can remember having the cassette reissue of this album and playing it so much the tape stretched and finally it was no more!
This CD release is very welcome and I'm quite sure that the sound quality is better too. Dating from 1989 this was an early CD on the Decca, Deram label. Running time approx 57 minutes.
The cast Ron Moody, Georgia Brown, Danny Sewell (the brother of George Sewell), Paul Whitsun-Jones and well cast Keith Hamshere in the title role bring the whole show to life. The orchestrations are by Eric Rogers and the orchestra was conducted by Marcus Dods. My favourite song on the CD is Ron Moody "Reviewing the Situation". The most powerful performance is ... I have been a fan of Lloyd Webber musicals for many years and have without exception found them all to have some merit and when Whistle Down The Wind was released I duly purchased the 2CD box set - I tried listening to it several times but to this day I just don't get it! Apart from the title track 'Whistle Down The Wind' and 'No Matter What' I found the rest tediously dull and overdone. There are many musicals that have taken a couple of listens to learn to love but no matter how hard I've tried with this it's not making any difference - it now resides in my garage and I won't even give it space on my 80GB ipod which has over 50GB free so what does that tell you!

I have been a fan of Lloyd Webber musicals for many years and have without exception found them all to have some merit and when Whistle Down The Wind was released I duly purchased the 2CD box set - I tried listening to it several times but to this day I just don't get it! With thirty minutes of dialogue, much of which is taken from songs that were cut, the movie soundtrack for "Rent" has less songs (28) that the cast album (43). I have been listening to the soundtrack pretty much nonstop since I saw the movie, playing it back to back with the cast album a couple of times. I am as stunned as others that all things considered I like this soundtrack album better, even if that means giving up on the voice mails from Mark's mom. Director Chris Columbus ended up casting six of the original eight stars of "Rent" for his movie version, and one thing this album has going for it is that they have brought a decade's worth of experiencing signing these songs plus to this recording.
