There are a number of good things about Silk Stockings, but there also is a professional finality about the movie that makes it easier to observe than to be delighted by it. It was one of the last of the big MGM musicals coming from Arthur Freed's production unit. It was the last musical Fred Astaire made as the lead. It was the last film directed by Rouben Mamoulian. It was based on the last Broadway musical Cole Porter wrote. Silk Stockings also was used to make a statement about the excesses some thought were ruining films and music...the advent of rock and roll and the technological changes in films with wide screen and stereo sound. It even takes a crack at the fashion for ballet in many musicals. You've got to be very clever and original ... Read More:

I was lucky enough to see the musical in New York in October and bought the soundtrack there. The music really is the best thing about it, new catchy songs have been added and are all as good as the originals that feature in the film.
Sherie Rene Scott in particular who plays the villain Ursula really stands out on the soundtrack, her version of 'Poor Unfortunate Souls' is better than that of the film version and she also has a few more songs in the soundtrack that have been added to the musical but were not in the film.
Overall, a fantastic soundtrack worthy of any cast recording collection and Mermaid or Disney fans in particular will love it.

Don't even think of buying one of 'Highlight' CD's as there's not even one song on here deserves to be missed out. Cameron Mackintosh is the best producer about at the moment and Boublil & Schönberg have written and composed a score that is gripping and full of raw emotion which makes you feel for all the character's feelings. I have listened to the recording at least once a day if not twice since I received it (please bare in mind that I got it about a month ago so it ain't one that gets boring quickly). If you like Les Miserables and Martin Guerre then this is one for you, If you haven't buy them aswell! One thing I must say is that I wasn't keen the first time I heard it but after the second/third playing I began to really get into the ... Read More:

Would you believe that Kissin' Cousins was MGMs highest grossing film ever, when it was released in 1964?.......true.
But it aint that good; the cast is excellent, one or two cracking songs and some good scenes. But overall this flimsy comedy is weak, and a sign of films to come over the nest 3 years or so.
Thankfully his final 3 films or so were very good, and redress the balance of the guff between 64 - 68; Roustabout/Viva Las Vegas and Frankie and Johnny aside.

This album is just sublime, even for straight blokes who don't like the theatre! I had this on a hissy old tape from the age of 7. Now I'm 30 and still marvel at the effect it has on the ladies when they see this in your CD collection. They think you're a love god or something. But against Barry Gibb in 1980? Boy, that's some competition...

The show is a masterpeice of modern theatre as well as modern musical theatre and the orchestration in this version demonstrates this. Although rather different to the original but I really cannot take Cerveris seriously as an evil barber from London's Fleet Street (harsh american notes slip in a lot, why? (and no being american is not an excuse)). Also, as much as I do love LuPone's voice (I have practically every recording of theatre she has done) it does not really fit the role of Mrs. Lovett (in my opinion) where I may make the bizarre suggestion that Bonham-Carter's untrained voice was better.
Overall this is a good version, let down (in my honest opinion) by the vocals. I would suggest that you buy "Original Broadway Cast" as it is arguably ... Read More:

We loved this! I have two kids 6 and 10 and High School Musical was just starting to wear thin. They couldnt wait to see Camp Rock! We really loved it,some kids do sometimes feel they have to lie to fit in and I think this film handled the consequences well.Fab songs which were well written and catchy.I suggest you buy the soundtrack too,as you wont be able to get the songs out of your head. The kids and me LOVED it.I even prefered it to High School Musical!Well done Disney.
