FTD has a durable reputation as a genuinely funny comedy, and one of The King's best movies. The latter may be true but then most of Elvis's films are dreadful. Though the star acts quite well here, the movie has dated badly. It's characterised by a particularly twee brand of lame humour, the story and characters are wafer thin, and - the title song excepted - the soundtrack numbers are forgettable.

To be honest, I was disgusted when I heard that Tell Me On a Sunday was to be revived - without Marti Webb. Being a huge fan of the singer, it didn't seem right to have a new version without her. Having said that, I found myself enjoying Denise Van Outen's version much more than I thought I would. Although she lacks the punch for songs such as Take That Look Off Your Face and the title song itself, she also manages to inject real feeling into songs such as Nothing Like You've Ever Known. I'm not a huge fan of the new songs such as Haven in the Sky and Speed Dating, although Tyler King is very good. All in all, a good try, I thought. Then I saw Marti Webb reprise her role in Birmingham - no contest. Come back Marti!

After seeing this televised ages ago 1984 - I got the LP, and the sound quality was not that great. So good to see this out in CD format was great. I love Sarah's version of Song & Dance. The sound quality has improved no end, the one negative comment is the lack of photos from the show that the LP had. I would remomend this to everyone who love a good show tune and likes the Sarah Brightman and Andrew Lloyd Webber combination.

I recently was given a ticket to see an amateur production of this musical at the Shaw Theatre in London, and was really expecting the worst-west end/broadway show tunes belting out! How wrong I was-the overture and first 5 or so songs are sung as a passage that is incredibly moving, and really captures the excitement, glamour and hopes of the maiden voyage. The styles of musical are unusual, some of which sound like beautiful hymns, and much of it is sung by large groups, and sung powerfully. I love this cast recording, and although the Broadway show must have been incredibly spectacular with the hydraulic stages and huge cast, the music stands alone. Love it!

Firstly, if you are looking for a duplicate Jeremy Northam singing Novello songs, look somewhere else. Unfortunately, Ivor Novello himself does not actually sing on this CD, but please, DO NOT LET THAT STOP YOU! Once you recover from the shock of hearing a female singing the songs and actually listen to the CD, you'll appreciate the beauty of the melodies in a much deeper sense than the songs highlighted in 'Gosford Park'. I believe this is made so by the full orchestral accompaniment each track receives. The familiar tunes of 'Waltz of my heart' and 'I Can Give You The Starlight' are here in their original format with singers such as Mary Ellis leading the way, and a number of other equally tuneful numbers are here, for example 'Love Is My Reason' ... With this being the film that launched Frank Sinatra to major things for MGM, this proves to be a great classic musical that hits all the right spots. Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra play two sailors on shore leave and who both fall for the same woman. Cue some great song and dance numbers by the pair, together and apart. Kathryn Grayson is also excellent as the female lead with also some great songs to sing. Also, watch out for the much celebrated sequence with Gene Kelly partnering Jerry the mouse (from Tom & Jerry). All in all, an excellent film.
