Elaine established herself long ago as Britain's finest theatrical singer. This compilation features several new recordings while bringing together the best of her earlier music from the seventies, eighties and nineties. Comparisons with Barbra Streisand are inevitable as they are both singer-actresses with similar types of voice (though you wouldn't mistake one for the other) and they've recorded each other's songs (Barbra has recorded Memory while Elaine has recorded The way we were, though it's not here) ad there are a few other songs that they've both recorded. But there are differences too, so there's plenty of room for both in the same music collection.
Elaine first became known as the original actress in the London cast ... Read More:

Britain's finest theatrical singer-actress (with a similar type of voice to Barbra Streisand) originally became famous as the leading actress in the West End musical, Evita. Her singing career didn't really get established until the release of her 1983 album, Stages, but while I regard that as her best original album, this one (from a year earlier) has much to commend it.
Tim Rice wrote many of the lyrics, even adding an extra verse to If you don't want my love, written by John Prine. John was impressed by Elaine's recording (so am I) but not by Tim messing around with his song, although I like the extra verse. Tim also wrote lyrics for the Paul McCartney instrumental, Hot as sun. I don't know what Paul thought of that. Tim didn't ... Read More:

I was a little doubtful on straying away from recording of Little Shop featuring the wonderful Ellen Greene, but boy, am I glad that I did! This CD is the first available to contain the entire score, including all the reprises! On top of that, there are 5 great bonus tracks, sung by Menkhen and Ashman (the composer and lyricist), which are a real treat! (and explain some of the more random lines in the final version of the show!)
The cast is superb, from Audrey right through to Audrey II! If you love Little Shop, and haven't heard this recording yet, buy it! It's well worth the money, and should even please other traditionalist Greene fans!

Sondheim's best show in my opinion but unfortunately it is not as well known as it should be. If you enjoy the C.D. I would also advise you get the D.V.D as well because then you will see the stunning performances from Mandy Patinkin and Brnadette Peters. They will always belong together. This is a beautiful and thouroughly moving show.ENJOY!!!

Over here in the UK at least, "Camelot" is hardly known. In truth the only reason I know it is because Julie Andrews is in the original broadway cast. "My Fair Lady" is loved everywhere and frequently revived, and indeed Julie Andrews features more prominent in the original cast recording for that show - if she be its popularity magnet that is.
I have never seen the musical, but for what I've read it seems the libretto is rather challengingly protracted. The music though is a jewel. It really sparkles with the shine of Camelot: of mythical, royal England. As such I can see why "Camelot" might not have been as popular as "My Fair Lady". Originating in the States, only a popular piece of entertainment would become endearing in the long ... Read More:

An excellent re-work of the original Roger & Hammerstein work with stunning performances from the principal artistes. If you enjoy the original soundtrack, you cannot fail to adore this superb re-work.

Upon forst impressions, the CD sounds incredibly Cheesey, not that it put me off! Ruthie Henshall plays the part of Polly to perfection on the recording, and Kirby Ward so crisp that even if he wispered his way through the show, it would still be clear enoguh to understand him!
There is no way I can pick out favourite songs, each one is as great as the next. However, Slap That Bass and I got Rythem will leave you singing for hours after lisenting to just 10 seconds. This recording is not some tacky London Cast, trying to beat the Broadway version, it is in fact much better, and I would Highly reccomend this one over Broadway.
Another highlight is that none of the msuic is cut from the recording, leaving it all there, making some sobgs last ... Read More:

I have both the 1968 London cast record as well as the 1970 Fresh Hair record. I was glad when I heard they combined the two recordings to make a more accurate recording of the musical.
My compaint with this CD is that they leave off the "Flesh Failures/Let the Sunshine In" from the 1968 version and replace it with an improvisation on the theme from the 1970 Fresh Hair. The 1968 version was much better and actually represented what was performed on the Shaftsbury stage. There was room on the disc to include this number as well as a couple more of the shorter Freash Hair songs. It would have been nice to hear Elaine Paige sing "Wash the World" on CD.

Wow i originally watched this musical in the theatre it wasnt that great but this film sure makes up for that.
Barry Manilow surprisingly good though the end is always sad when Tong dies. Annette O'Toole as Lola fabulous she really shows how the world as a singer was then.
Man Wanted is my favourite song and i just love the way its performed by Manilow and O'Toole.
Would totally recommend for a night in with songs to sing-a-long to and then make you laugh then cry its brilliant!!!
