the orginal chess is such a musical epic this sounds very pale in comparission.

the epic feel of the musical extravaganza has gone..and has much of the original story!

most of the story and the songs are reworked but the mastery is lacking!

for fans of abba its interesting! for fans of "chess" its an interesting interpretation! but if you are new to chess please buy the original cd...its a hundred times better...the sound..the vocals..the orchestration is so much bigger and better..and the actual story is easier to follow than this version!

a nice add on or follow up but not a good introduction

This recording is fantastic! I went to see the stage show three times in 1996 at Aberystwyth Uni, got to know the cast really well and fell in love with the music. I go nowhere without this CD and feel utterly horrible when I can't play it. I have now got a whole group of people listening to it too. You'll love it!

The track listing of this set is certainly impressive, although i'm disappointed to say the quality isn't. I won't even listen to 'Memory' or 'The Phantom of the Opera' on it.
But is does have some pretty good performances. 'The Circle of Life' and "Anything You Can Do' are certainly worth listening to.
But the one reason to buy this set, and i would honestly buy it again just for this one song if i lost mine, is Macavity. The version of Macavity on the Andrew Lloyd Webber cd blows my mind every time. If you're a Cats fan you must own this set.

Anyone who has an interest in soul and R&B and has not heard this album whether interested in musicals or not, should buy this. Thankfully now that the movie is going to be released, by this time next year, you'll be wishing you had took my advice. This album is the original broadway cast, and will never be recreated with as much heart, soul and volume as this little gem. Get it now before it is once again made unavailable in all its originality.

Threepenny Opera

In bringing the Threepenny Opera up to date, this splendid production also brings it closer to its original Brechtian roots. The better-known 1954 revival with lyrics by Marc Blitzstein, while revolutionary for its time, was obliged to tone down the lyrics and the setting considerably to get past the censorious mores of the times. The Donmar Warehouse production is gutsy and reminds you who Mack the Knife is supposed to be -- an antihero, yes, but also a hardened gang leader who lives by murder, robbery and rape.

Take it from someone who has seen The Threepenny Opera in German, English and French, produced on stages throughout Europe and the United States -- this is a stunning production!

I was lucky enough to catch the musical during its sadly shortened run in London in 2007. I found the show tremendous good fun, but then I was a massive fan of the early series of the TV series, on which the musical is based. Unfortunately, the musical, debuting in London some six years after the culmination of its storylines were depicted on-screen to millions of viewers, could not find a sufficient audience in the West End. On the bright side, fans can sit back and enjoy this CD which contains all of the songs in the London staging of the musical (one song featured in the West Yorkshire Playhouse production, "P-P-P-Please", was cut in the London version).
