I bought this CD when I was in Europe about 5 years ago. It is by far my favorite Andrew Lloyd Webber collection CD (and I have about 6 others besides this one)! It is played over and over and over in my house. My mother also loves it and often takes it to work with her.
I HIGHLY recommend this recording if you are an Andrew Lloyd Webber fan. This recording includes a variety of songs from a variety of his musicals. There are songs from Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar, Phantom, Song and Dance, Joseph and the Amazing Technocolor Dreamcoat, and others! It is definitely a great buy!

Don't be put off by the title. The show isn't cheesy, or badly done. It's brilliant! Sutton Foster stars as the now infamous character, Jo March and has a fantastic solo called "Astonishing" at the end of Act One. Other highlghts include Maureen McGovern's "Days of Plenty", "Some Things are Meant to Be" (a very sad song between Jo and Beth), "The Weekly Volcano Press" (when Jo first arrives in New York) and "Our Finest Dreams" (the four March sisters rehearse their 'Operatic Tragedy' for the Christmas festivities).
There are some very funny moments, some sad moments and some moments where you wished this soundtrack had been with you all your life!
If you love Little Women, you will definately love this. The characters all appear ... Read More:

Just a quick comment to the reviewers who object to the American accents on this recording. Sondheim is American, and 'Broadway' is American. This is a Broadway cast recording of a Sondheim musical. How strage to object to something about this recording which is inherant to it's source! Can you imagine ojecting to the British accents in an RSC production of Hamlet? How bizarre! This is a brilliant recording of a brilliant show. If you prefer Andrew Lloyd-Weber, then you deserve him.

The best of the four was Monte Carlo, staring Jack Buchanan (most commonly know for his preformaces on Broadway and on the London stage) as his persona and character is pleasant and likable. He is far better than Maurice Chevalier who comes across as far too egotistical in the other 3 to be enjoyable.
If you are looking for the sweet romantic comedies of the time this is not the set to buy. Chevalier loves them and leaves them, and you, unsatisfied.

Orignially I was a little dissapointed by it but like most musical soundtracks it takes a few listens to become accustomed to the style and story it became one of the prizes of my musical collection.
Great performances by all with both good fun songs ('See What I Wanna See','The Greatest Practical Joke') and amazingly sung ballads with really moving subjects ('There Will Be A Miricle', 'Louie', 'Kesa' and 'Morito' (same song different singers).

I haven't seen this on stage so I judge only by what I see here. This is hard to define as a musical as there are so few actual musical numbers in the traditional sense. It veers from the odd proper musical number to odd bits of singing without any connection. The whole Cassie story seems attached to the rest of the film and why don't they just chuck her out of the theatre - how hard is that? It opens well with the mass auditions but it is downhill after that. The only decent musical number is the T1ts and @ss song which earns the entire 1 star here. The rest makes very little sense. Why do they all come back for the ending? Odd.

Whilst I am very fond of both 'Les Miz' and 'Miss Saigon' on the whole, I cannot recommend 'Pirate Queen' as being of the same standard at all. (I found 'Martin Guerre' very uneven too). On first listening, it all seemed OK but with subsequent listening, a lot of the music seemed overdone or just plain 'ordinary'. It seems that the musical inspiration of the writers has waned to such an extent that I won't seriously search out any more from Boublil & Schonberg; which is a great pity. They proved that 'Les Mis' was not a 'one hit wonder' when 'Saigon' did so well, (although I confess that I still cannot stand to hear 'American Dream' repeatedly!) 'Pirate Queen' has a strange tendency to irritation; the lyrics are workmanlike but not inspired (an attempt to ... Read More:

An excellent collection of Jacques Brel's songs sung in English. Mort Shuman,Elly Stone, Alice Whitfield and Shawn Elliott are an amazing cast and sing all songs with tremendous verve and feeling.
