I have loved this show since I first heard the music on the broadcast of the 1991 Tony awards in the US. The original Broadway cast is amazing and Daisy Egan (Mary Lennox) won the award for best featured actress in a musical in 1991. (I think she may have been the youngest person to ever win that award.)
Due to my adoration of the recording of that production I thought I'd give the London Cast a whirl. I was not disappointed. While it lacked some of the broader orchestrations, it had a more beautiful, delicate tone to several of the songs. And, though I love Mandy Patinkin, I think that this new recording adds even more depth to Archie.

This film and soundtrack are a feast upon the senses. Visually the film is fantastic, while at the same time you continually find yourself closing your eyes in order to allow your ears to capture all that is happening around you. The soundtrack, in my eyes, has been given the biggest compliment any childrens film's soundtrack can be given, Disney use the soundtrack's main theme in their advertising campaign. If that doesnt give it credentials, then nothing does!!!

Shockheaded Peter contains the most extraordinary elements. The trilling falsetto of Martyn Jacques delivers lyrics which clunk and jar with the textures of grainy translation. The musical arrangements flit between Camberwickian banjo and accordion to the whirring, yelping, growling, ditties that rattle like Ute Lemper on a bad trip. The grotesque subjects are children who are de-thumbed, incinerated, starved or beaten -- invariably to death.
This freak show of ideas shouldn't work; but it does, and it does so very well. My first listening to this album didn't start very hopefully, but by the time I got to the end I decided that I immediately had to listen to the entire album again. And then again for a third listening. Hoffmann's fairytales are ... Read More:

No doubt the best recording of Sweet Charity so far. The orchestrations are great, every single artist is amazing, especially Christina Applegate. She hasn't got the strongest or most unique voice, but makes a perfect and Sweet Charity! Other members worth mentioning, are Janine LaManna who truly carries There's Gotta Be Something Better Than This, and Kyra Da Costa, who is just as brilliant. The perfect CD for Sweet Charity fans!

Bernstein wrote himself into the annals of musical history with the score which he composed for West Side Story, a nineteen fifties version of Romeo and Juliet, and Stephen Sondheim did it justice with the terrific lyrics he wrote which made the music soar even higher. This a musical which has entered the popular consciousness with good reason. Who hasn't heard the beauty and poetry of "Maria", the expectant poignancy of "Tonight", or the eternally hopeful "Somewhere" and not been touched, especially when sung, as they are here, by Jim Bryant and Marnie Nixon? There is also the upbeat "America" and "I Feel Pretty" which are ensemble songs geared to showcase Jerome Robbins' choreography to perfection. This is a magnificent CD which should be a part of ...
