Iv'e owned the CD Vangelis "Themes" for some while now, and i rate it very highly. What a disappointment this CD, the best of vangelis was. Nothing of the quality and originality of Vangelis of the 80's and 90's (listen to "Themes" and compare). All i heard was re-hashing of old material from this period, and third rate at that. I wondered why it sold so cheap!? now i know.. And being a musician and composer, i do know what i'm talking about.

Plains

This album has a really nice collection of music. I like almost all of the songs in this album. The song, Plains, is my most favourite track. It is a very simple and moving music, remind me very much of New Zealand or Montana landscapes. The song is very similar to some of the tunes written by composers like Dave Grusin and Thomas Newton. The track, "Teach me Tonight" is not on my favourite list of George Winston's songs because it is too loud and especially when you are relaxing with the rest of the slow songs from the album, this particular track seems to be out of place and it spoils the mood of peacefulness on the album.

I'm a big fan of Mr Micus for his musicianship, his vision and his dedication to a unique life project. This is one of my absolute favourites among his recordings, since he is playing stones.

Everything about this record is captivating from the ambience of the cathedral in which it was recorded to the strange tunings and variations in the stones themselves. But as ever with Micus the means are always outshone by the results

As usual, Micus is inspired, creating unique landscapes of sound in which every reflection and breath of wind are revealed as the soft whisperings of spirit. The many facets of this album may dazzle, but the musical whole is a perfect jewel.

Guitarist Dominic Frasca delivers a virtuoso permonance that is veritable minimalist masterclass. Performing works by himself and contemporary Marc Mellits, and one early austere work by Philip Glass, Frasca displays his talents as composer and musician. Frasca and Mellits are often seen as proteges of Steve Reich (both perform in his group), but it is the pleasing harmonic variety of their works that place them as more the heirs of Reich's great rival Philip Glass, and the new works here would do the old master proud.

Punchy, hypnotic and never less than compelling.

Lovely Thunder

I'm not really sure where Lovely Thunder ranks among Budd's other works. There's no denying the brilliance of The White Arcades or even the classics he did with Brian Eno (The Pearl & The Plateaux Of Mirror). Thunder ranks near the top simply for containing elements of those releases.

So powerful is "The Gunfighter" that it could have been used in any Sergio Leone film. I can see Clint Eastwood clamp down on his cigar everytime i listen to it. Budd shifts gears in dramatic fashion. Forcing you to feel the heat and isolation of "Sandtreader". Driving you into your sweltering introversion. "Ice Floes In Eden" plays like a cold sweat. Thunder claps of tension filled withdrawl, enhanced with the definitive drama of a syringe hanging from ... Read More:
