This album is a godsend. The three greatest pieces of music ever written are on here - Dirt, Rosasolis and Perpetuum Mobile. I still struggle to believe how great they are. It's hard to describe the style of music - modern orchestral maybe, though it's not avant garde. Penguin Café's music is amazingly relaxing, and always de-stresses me instantly. People always go on about certain artists deaths being a waste of talent - none more so than Simon Jeffes. I am just thankful he managed to do so much great work before he passed away. God rest his soul.

Today, Vangelis is best known for his powerful film scores such as "Chariots of Fire", and (more deserved) "Blade Runner" and "1492". But during the 70s and 80s, Vangelis composed some of his best works on regular albums. This 40 minute long album from 1979 is probably one of Vangelis' very best. It contains some of his most well-known tunes such as "Hymne" and "L'Enfant" in their original and most beautiful versions. There's also the very dream-like "Rêve" and the brilliant GHOSTly "Chromatique". Finally, "Irlande" completes this (sadly) forgotten masterpiece. Apparently, the cover design was done by Vangelis himself, which just contributes to the fact that this ... Read More:

This is a wonderful album. I bought this on tape and listened it to death. It's soothing, but uplifting...when I was suffering from clinical depression this was one I'd reach for almost every day. It made me feel happy! I think this one of my favorite Nightnoise albums. Their sound can almost be described as Celtic-jazz, but that's not really right. There's a guitar (which is often used as the percussion sound) the piano, a flute and a fiddle-violin(I don't know if there's a difference). Some of their songs having singing, some are acoustic. This line up has three Irish and one Scot. I highly recommend it if you want something soothing, but not too slow. It's good either as background music or just lying on your bed with your headphones on.
