I must agree that this is in my opinion my favourite compilation of Vangelis's music. This is the one I play most, then followed closely by Gift.

With Vangelis's Best Of and compilations growing almost daily, you can not go wrong with this. What makes it really good and different is that you have Memories Of Green from the elusive See You Later cd.

Overall this CD is a very good selection and has a nice flow to it, slip it on and relax. Don't worry you have 13 tracks before the Chariots of Fire theme. By that time you will have reached a chill factor of let it all play man, all is great with the world and you can spare 3 minutes 31 seconds of your life, and listen to it again like I just did.

Cafe Del Mar - Aria Vol.2

At first it sounds like you are in for some psuedo classic/pop 'fusion' in the mode of 'hooked on classics'( YUK !)but this has genuine quality.
The drumming is too prominent and is a cheap distraction to an otherwise very good album. Barcarolle and Ave Maria are both excellent. Barcarolle has some brilliant orchestral backing and the whole thing is a great version of an original which is equally beautiful ( hear a version of the original in the film 'Life is Beautiful' to get the full impact).

Mertens - Educes me

This must be the finest of WM's "middle period" works. Three exquisite compositions among others: "A Visiting Card" which opens the album and immediately establishes the mood hinted at by the cover photo (!), "When the Line Grows Thick" is perfectly descriptive: multiplying clarinets from Dirk Descheemaeker plus women's voices, and finally, "No Plans No Projects" - the most transcendent piece of music WM has ever produced. This is getting dangerously close to a religious experience.

Don't spend your money on this one, unless you really need a comprehensive Secret Garden collection. I note some generous 5 star ratings - perhaps from people who are unfamiliar with previous Secret Garden offerings and are listening to this in isolation. If however you are already a Secret Garden aficionado, then Martin Wedge's scathing review may well resonate with you and 2 or 3 stars is a fair assessment taken in that context.
Yes this, their latest offering, follows precisely the same musical formula that has previously produced so much satisfying and memorable music, culminating in their "Once in a Red Moon" album, with tunes that linger obstinately in your mind.

The Andalucian Suites

Martín's playing and song-writing is brilliant -- his guitar has a very bright/hard sound to it, which lends itself well to his style. The album as a whole is very enjoyable, and it contains some superb highlights, like "Feria" -- if you like solo flamenco guitar, this is certainly a "must have"

Piano, guitars, sitar, oboe, tamboura and a church choir create the most beautiful music on this remarkable album. Höre, Der Du Wagst starts with the gentle sounds of sitar and piano for a slow brooding buildup, then the pace picks up with Das Schloss des Irtums where the guitars gain prominence and likewise on Die Umkehr. The real masterpiece is Brüder des Schattens, Söhne des Lichts with its hypnotic, repetitive melody line and its gorgeous sitar, piano and guitar. This magnificent piece is more classical than popular music and would not be out of place on a Steve Reich album in its minimalist textures. I have been listening to Mike Oldfield since Tubular Bells and own every single piece he has ever produced including all the singles (who remembers Guilty, William Tell Overture, Froggy went a Courting?) Over the years Mike has reached musical brilliance but has sometimes, I think in an effort to be different, slightly missed the mark. (I found Guitars a bit disappointing)Although I keep in mind what Tolkien said about his book, in that what altogether was loved by some readers was sometimes hated by others. So it is also for Mike - but this is one of his finest pieces. having all sarah albums this was a bit of a disappointment...sure there are some classic songs on here....like her covers of stay with me and winter in july..which would deserve 5 stars!!!!

but the rest is a bit run of the mill! whiter shade of pale and scarborough fair are ok but the rest just fade into insignificance!

ive tried so hard to like this album but its a bit too opera and classical for me! its not bad just a bit monotonous.....

if you like her classics and opera buy timeless or the classics..if you like her a bit more ambient get dive, fly or harem

its a good album for fans but if you want an introduction to miss b...its not her best!!!!

I bought the box set aswell as the the single c.d 'a brief history' and to be honest I think that anyone unfamiliar would be better off buying 'Brief History' first because it has all the famous tracks on.

If you know their music then it would be a good idea to buy the single c.d 'Brief History' aswell as the 'History' box set.

The remastering is top notch.

My only criticism is that it's a little heavy on the live tracks.

L'Apocalypse Des Animaux

Although one of his earliest solo works, "L'Apocalypse des Animeux" contains some of Vangelis's most impressive and evocative music. Possibly because the music was written to accompany a series of Frédéric Rossif documentaries about wildlife, the majority of the tracks are slow and atmospheric, and synthesizers are used with subtlety.

A good example of the quality here is "Le Singe Blue", whose poignant trumpet theme recalls Miles Davis's sublime version of "It Never Entered My Mind". More unusual is "Création du Monde". Lasting almost 10 minutes and full of atmosphere, the piece conveys a sense of the mystery and grandeur of nature.
