The PCO's debut album is a fascinating record of mostly instrumental music that combines elements of classical, folk, jazz, and minimalism. Many of the tunes, like the opening "Penguin Café Single", sound familiar like you've heard them before (and often you have in a film or commercial) but they are littered with unexpected twists and turns that lend an edge to the music.
Whereas some instrumental music spawns somewhat random titles the marvellously titled "The Sound of Someone You Love Who's Going Away and It Doesn't Matter" describes the album's brooding 12-minute masterpiece perfectly. A heartrending melody is lightly plucked on guitar before being gradually joined by strings and jazz lounge electric piano. Following a ... Read More:

I did buy Harold's ep "A serpent in quicksilver" upon release, and loved it. It was far to short to justify the price at the time, but I was enthralled by "A Plateaux Of Mirror", which, with Brian Eno, constituted my favorite overall Ambient series lp by Eno. ["Thursday Afternoon" and "Apollo:Atmospheres & Soundtracks" are gorgeous for certain times--check them out for great atmospherics. They were not in Eno's LP series of ambient albums.I believe "Thursday Afternoon was the first cd-only release, clocking in around 63 minutes. I have put in on in early morning many a time and been 'heightened'
"Abandoned Cities" hadn't quite the charm, wistfullness & misty autumness as Budd's "Serpent" ep, but it held for those long sessions ... Read More:

In its original 1978 release, this was the soundtrack to the movie Nosferatu. This is the demo version of that album with one bonus track. Piano, guitars, sitar, oboe, tamboura and a church choir create the most beautiful music on this remarkable work. Höre, Der Du Wagst starts with the gentle sounds of sitar and piano for a slow brooding buildup, then the pace picks up with Das Schloss des Irtums where the guitars gain prominence and likewise on Die Umkehr. The real masterpiece is the title track Brüder des Schattens, Söhne des Lichts with its hypnotic, repetitive melody line and its gorgeous sitar, piano and guitar. This magnificent piece is more classical than popular music and would not be out of place on a Steve Reich album in its minimalist ... Read More:

This is my most favourite album for relaxatiom, meditation and Tai Chi. Mike Rowland truly captures the soul and touches the senses with his beautiful rendition of music and nature. I first bought this classic many ,many years ago when it was released on cassette only, and have purchased several cd's of it since for gifts to friends . In every case they have always been bowled over by its magical harmonies and sensitivity. It is really is one of the great pieces of inspiration I have ever experienced. Over the many years I have come to treasure it more and more. I have collected Mike's music for many years and consider him to be one of the finest and sincere musicians of our time.
