Aside from the pioneering use of tape manipulated synth; mind blowing back in '75, check out the variations on Pachebel's Canon. The scariest music ever committed to tape - possibly.

I bought a few of these CDs thinking they'd contain a good relaxing soundtrack of rain, a storm (etc), but instead you get a bunch of tracks which start and end with a few seconds of this, and then drift into terrible, cheesy ambient music - the sort of rubbish you'd expect to hear in a shopping mall - with no hint of the themes the CD titles suggest. I'm an ambient fan by the way - listen to Brian Eno etc - so know bad ambient music when I hear it. If you like shopping mall music, then by all means go for it, but the titles of these terrible CDs tell you nothing about their true content. I feel conned out of £[...]...

Well, I think the Cocteau Twins were a great band and as for Harold Budd, I could listen to his lullaby piano for the rest of my life. However, I've never really thought of this, a one-off collaboration from 1986, as a successful meeting of minds. The problem is that what you have here, effectively, are two separate mini-albums spliced together. Half the tracks sound like pretty much everything else the Cocteau Twins were doing in the mid-eighties, except that if you listen carefully you can just about hear a piano desperately trying to make itself heard above the noise; and the other half of the album sounds, basically, like Harold Budd's solo work from the same period.
For me, the album works best on the tracks where the instrumentation ... Read More:

Loreena McKennit is a very skilful musician and she combines simple themes with complex arragements. The music is traditional-celtic-folk style with a new-age twist. The musicians who perform on this CD are to a very high standard and the mixing is done well so that all instruments can be heard properly. A great deal of work has gone into producing this album, as has been done with Loreena's later work. The pieces are all very different, though "Bonny Swans" does get rather tedious and there's a tendency to fast-forward to the next track after one minute of it. However, if you like traditional celtic folk music, you're sure to enjoy this one.

This album, originally released in 1973, was Clannad's first offering to the world. Already on this first album Clannad made its mark (at least in my opinion). As the band's name indicates, Clannad (which means family), was comprised of one sister, Maire her brothers Ciaran, Paul Brennan and their twin uncles Noel and Padraig Duggan (Paul would later leave the group to pursue a musical career of his own). Certainly an intensely Irish musical family and their joy in making music together is evident throughout.
This first album displays all of the strengths which characterize their work in general: - Maire's ethereal and hauntingly beautiful voice, perhaps Clannad's most powerful musical asset. The harmonious choruses of Maire and the men which pave ... Read More:

For a composer who has produced such timeless tracks (mainly those from his first album, Adiemus) Karl Jenkins seems to have let himself down a bit with his predecessing efforts. The Eternal Knot has an Irish influence running throughout, but I find the often highly tedious vocals rarely blend with the Celtic sound. The styles of some tracks are also unoriginal, with a very blatant method of adding "Irishness" to the cauldron of sounds. If the vocals were not sung by a choir of smurfs (the lead singer doesn't actually sing specific words; as Jenkins has previously admitted, they are made up sounds) I might actually be able to enjoy this album a lot more than I currently do.
The only songs worth a listen are Cu Chullain, King of The Sacred ... Read More:
