This was the first Clannad CD I ever bought, because I was an Enya fan, and this is where she started out. Clannad is the band created by Enya's brothers and uncles in the late 60ies. They soon took Enya's older sister Maire as a lead singer, and their music evolved into a mix between pop, new age and traditional music. This CD is very useful to get to know the more "poppy" Clannad. You'll hear all their big classics, some of them are really wonderful. You'll have "Theme to Harry's Game", which is haunting and beautifully sad. You'll also find "In a Lifetime", a melancholic duet with Bono from U2 and the very sad but beautiful "Almost Seems Too Late to Turn". Of course there's also the part of traditional ... Read More:

This is a beautiful album that I would recommend to anyone, not just those with an interest in folk music. Some will find the strong Scottish accent difficult at first but perserve, this is pretty much as good as it gets. Great songs, great playing, genuine passion, much humour and a superb recording for good measure.
The highlights are `51st (Highland) Division's Farewell To Sicily' and a cover of `Ruby Tuesday' that makes the Stones original sound lifeless. There is no dross here - put the effort in and this album will repay you in spades.

I have other recordings of wave sounds and found this particular one to be not as relaxing for some reason. I think it was because I didn't get the sense of a slow ebbing and flowing of the waves.
However, there is no 'plinky-plunky music' (quote from Phoebe in 'Friends') and to me that is a big plus!

Just to add a clarification to my original review -- this is theunadulterated whale song -- no music superposed or any other human stuff(other than some ship's engine noise in the far distance on onetrack). Snatches of these recordings have appeared in other places overthe years -- in rock tracks, film soundtracks, and underneath whimsicalhuman music. I prefer just to listen to the whales!

This album has one thing in common with Metal Machine Music: there are four instrumental tracks. There the similarities end. Metal Machine Music was the result of two hours of harsh feedback sped up to twice the speed to garner the final effect. It was also deceptively promoted as a Rock N' Roll Animal type product, which led many purchasers at the time to be disappointed with what they got (and the album was pulled off the shelves after three weeks). Of course now, in hindsight, Metal Machine Music was a brilliant study in "noise" music and has been reissued many times for a more appreciative audience.
Hudson River Wind Meditations was originally written by Lou Reed for himself to accompany his Tai Chi and meditative practices. Since ... Read More:

Don't spend your money on this one, unless you really need a comprehensive Secret Garden collection. I note some generous 5 star ratings - perhaps from people who are unfamiliar with previous Secret Garden offerings and are listening to this in isolation. If however you are already a Secret Garden aficionado, then Martin Wedge's scathing review may well resonate with you and 2 or 3 stars is a fair assessment taken in that context.
Yes this, their latest offering, follows precisely the same musical formula that has previously produced so much satisfying and memorable music, culminating in their "Once in a Red Moon" album, with tunes that linger obstinately in your mind.
I suppose that we have come to expect too much - the bubble has to burst ... Read More:

Like most other people I was introduced to the music of David Bedford through the Mike Oldfield 'Collaborations' boxed set in 1976.
I bought the original (recorded in Matrix H Quadrophonic) and am delighted to have the crystal clear CD recording.
This album is worth the money for the title track alone. Play the title track LOUD. The rest of the album is superb too and one of David Bedford's most accessible. It still sounds fresh, 25 years later.

I bought the CD for the track Dyonisus which features in the Gangs of New York CD (which I strongly recommend as well!)& I wasn't disappointed. The music is very unusual and soothing, I love to listen to it after a hard day at work, I think it works well as a background music too, and it will definitely be a talking point if you play it while you have some guests! Thumbs up for this brilliant music!
