Influenced by the guitar sound of The Stooges and The Velvet Undeground-like vocals the Reid brothers made this stunning record and so they set the bar for Noise pop and indie-rock to come. I have yet to come over anything more original and stunning than this from it's genre.

This is a fantastic complete collection of the fantastic 80's syntheseiser duo Yazoo (Alison Moyet and Vince Clarke). It contains both of their albums, Upstairs At Eric's (No. 2 in 1982) and You And Me Both (No. 1 in 1983) and a third CD of A-B Sides and 12" Remixes and a DVD of both the albums in 5.1 Mix, Promotional Videos, A Short Film and Yazoo At The BBC.

It contains the classic "Only You" which made No. 2 in the charts in April 1982 and my favourite track of theirs "The Other Side Of Love" which made No. 13 in November 1982. The 7" and 12" mixes are on CD3 of this collection as it did not appear on either albums.

Like all cut price compilations they are most telling for their omissions rather than what they include. This one has only one glaring omission debut side `The Selecter' the instrumental on the b-side of The Specials 45 `Gangsters' which created the initial excitement to start the band in the first place. Also absent is the classic version of the cover of `Train to Skaville' which with its 12" dub version was definitely a high point of the bands career.

However gripes aside it manages to include the non album singles `On My Radio' and my personal favourite `The Whisper' along with the best eight cuts from the debut LP `Too Much Pressure'. The remaining six songs are drawn from the bands disappointing second LP `Celebrate the Bullet' which is perhaps too many. ... Read More:

The Complete BBC Sessions

These BBC sessions take us from the late 70's punk clatter of the splendidly silly 'Bang Bang' and the sublime 'Take Me I'm Yours' to the gorgeous 'Some Fantastic Place' (Chris Difford & Glenn Tilbrook's favourite Squeeze song) in 1994.
Over the course of 2 cd's we are treated to spirited versions of most of the bands big hits, misses and prime album tracks (strangely though no 'Cool For Cats'). It is obvious that Squeeze were a fine live proposition with the musical chops to go with the often sublime songwriting. However there's nothing on here that betters the studio versions and, while the three 'Tempteds' varily wildly in style, no one but true completists will be overly interested (no matter how hard Glenn Tilbrook tries this song will always belong to the hugely ... I only got this album 15 years after it came out, being too young in the 80's to notice indie music, but I remember waiting outside my local record shop at 8.30 in the morning before it opened up specifically to buy this album. It's that good!

The lightning fast guitars, the groaning, the lurgy, and lyrics like, "every time a car drives past/ I think it's you, every time somebody laughs/I think it's you." although that's from a bonus track, it still fits the theme of the rest of the album perfectly.

Gedge ya gadge, I salute you!

Or when The Jam took off and really started fulfilling the potential they had shown with a string of singles and intermittently on their previous albums In The City And This Is The Modern World. All Mod Cons see's Paul Weller embracing a more English stance to his song-writing , with undercurrents of 1960,s pop like The Kinks - so much so they even cover the Kinks song "David Watts". The albums title also alludes playfully to the bands prevalence in the Mod revival.
The songs on All Mod Cons are often about ordinary people , or places but viewed through Weller's coruscating filter . Both the single and album, 'No More Heroes,' were eagerly gobbled up by punk fans already familiar with the band's exhilarating mix of brutal bass and keyboard runs. While the single gained a unanimous thumbs-up as did the other hit, 'Something Better Change,' the album took some criticism for being a pale rehash of The Stranglers' debut effort. In truth, some of the lyrical content is too obviously rude for the sake of it, but the band still had some imaginative ideas, notably 'Dead Ringer,' 'Dagenham Dave,' and 'Burning Up Time.' 'School Mam,' which finishes the album, is almost vaudevillean, if tasteless. Bonus tracks bolster the album, however. A chronological collection of XTC's singles for Virgin these highlight the band's development from post-punk power poppers to sublime songwriting craftsmen...slightly quirky lyrics and off kilter rhythms separate them from most bands' output, and there is an edge to Andy Partridge's songwriting which makes you think there is a dark side to his personality reflected in his songs...Colin Moulding is more pop oriented but still entertaining for all that. "Senses working overtime" is my favourite here, but there are at least half a dozen others that deserve the epithet "classics". Great collection.
