With 1980's adventurous More Specials the Coventry band overcame the 'difficult second album syndrome', a fate which has befallen many an artist over the years. They did this by broadening their musical palette; where their classic debut (effectively) embraces the ska and reggae of Prince Buster, The Skatalites and Toots and The Maytals, this album sees them venturing into a wider variety of genres, including northern soul (`Sock It To `Em J.B.'), spaghetti westerns soundtracks (`Stereotypes') and easy listening (`Enjoy Yourself (It's Later Than You Think)'). That is not to say they jettisoned all that made The Specials so exciting and different: lead singer Terry Hall still delivers his vocals with a flat, deadpan delivery and the lyrics and ... Is there a less appealing musical term than `white funk'? The phrase conjures up any number of appalling possibilities, but that's exactly what `Entertainment!' is. And it's a fantastic album - perhaps the definitive post-punk LP.
Musically, `Entertainment!' melds elements of punk, funk, rock, and dub. The bass sound is much more prominent than in most `white' albums of the time to create a curiously uptight, precisely-drilled form of punk/funk - a long way from the seemingly loose-limbed sound of Black America patented by James Brown.
Lyrically, the album is fascinating. Could any other album give a critique on the Marxist concept of alienated labour (as `Entertainment!' does in `Natural's Not In It') and remain so listenable? ... Read More:

One of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. Some of the original pieces, for example "Drive to the boatyard", are just incredible, and worth the purchase on their own. Then you've got Duran Duran and The Cure, without mentioning FC Kahuna's beautiful chillout tune. As another reviewer mentioned, this album brings together a lot of seemingly disparate tunes, yet it is coherent and approachable. An easy five stars.

This album is a great follow-on from Sing the Sorrow, I would say it is more varied and it's packed with instant classics (e.g. Miss Murder).
I loved the album from start to finish. The last track (Head Like a Hole) really reminds me of a track by Nine Inch Nails, although I can't remember the name.

The League's finest hour is also a key work in the canon of '70s/'80s electronica and fit to rank alongside Bowie's 'Low'. Worth owning if only for the supercharged reworked of 'Being Boiled', the defiantly bleak 'Life Kills', and the hilariously doomy version of 'Rock 'n Roll. Dark, compelling and endlessly inventive.

This amazingly lush offering from the Cure contains a vast amount of rarities and 'B-sides' from their long and successful recording career.
It's not really the kind of collection you stick on and listen to all the way through. This is beacuse it's really a feast for committed fans of the band. The Cure were both fabulously precocious and stunningly gifted and this combination meant that they had the balls to try out all sorts of ideas.
This also means that 'Join The Dots' contains some deleriously successful bits of music and others that don't quite work.
When the first singles collection (Standing On A Beach) was released, the B-side of the cassette edition contained the B-sides to the singles. 'Join the Dots' includes all of these and much, ... Read More:

I bought this when it originally came out on cassette. It must be one of my most played albums ever. I cant quite see why the comparisons between this and the debut album have to polarise opinion so much. Personally I love the melody and the lyrics on this album whilst the buzz saw guitars are still a prescence if more accessible than on PyscoCandy. And I really did 'live my life in black' back then though the album is still contempary and has survived the years well.

Despite being practically THE most innovative band on the Manchester and post-punk scene, this debut on reflection still has many adhereants to the punk template. At the time what set them apart was the slower numbers and the inclusion of keyboards in the band. The keyboards may have lost their novelty value, but they still create an effective bleak atmosphere for such post-punk classics as "Two Steps Back" and "Frightened". MES' lyircs may be a touch generic on some numbers, with most of the songs about drugs and little to indicate his great lyrics in the future, but No Xmas for John Quays still throws up some great lines. Much has been made of this debut, and most of it still stands up, but the expanded edition with the contemporary Peel Sessions and singles would be a much wiser purchase.

Men At Work seemed to me to be a band out of their time. I first became interested when I heard their US hit, 'Who Can It Be Now?' They sounded as if they'd taken up the mantle of late 1970s music, like The Cars' debut album, their sound dominated by guitars and sax rather than keyboards. As such, they were a refreshing diversion. The better-known hit, 'Down Under' is probably thought of as their signature tune, but 'Who Can It Be Now?' fits that role better. A song about a down-on-his-luck man who daren't answer the door, it reflects the band's personal struggles when they formed and the ironic name they gave themselves.
The album is full of great tunes, carried off in a perky manner. The first half of the album is perfect pop, culminating in the breathless 'Helpless Automaton.' They take more ... Read More:

There isn't a bad track on the album.
The songs range from funky and hip to quiet and melodic.
My two personal favourites include 'Minnie and Santa', a song about an old ladies crush on Santa and her wish come true. My second favourite is 'Home on Christmas day', its always the song that touches my heart when I'm far from home at Christmas.
Its not dry and boring like some of the older christmas songs are because of their overuse and commercial abuse. You put this album on and have a little taste of everything that christmas is about, togetherness, melancholy, warmth and hope.
A great singer, a fantastic album. I would recommend to music lovers of all tastes.
