Presented in a chronological way this collection allows you to move with Bowie as he developed his style with experience and trends of the time. With such gems as 'Space Oddity', 'Starman', 'Ashes to Ashes', 'China Girl' and one of my personal favourites 'Modern Love' and more besides, this album has so many outstanding tracks to whet your appetite. After the hit 'n miss debut album and the punky, raucous second album, Ultravox finally defined their sound with Systems of Romance - and delivered the masterpiece of which we knew they were capable .

Systems will be remembered by most as the last Foxx album but it's also first time the band worked with German producer Conny Plank and in him Ultravox appear to have found a kindred spirit, someone who could help them create their remarkable blend of electronic, experimental and traditional instrumentation. It's surely no coincidence that Plank oversaw all of the band's best work (and U-Vox, but we'll quickly skip over that).

It's definitley one of the best covers albums I own. but, apart from the fact that Cave's versions of these songs are brilliant rereadings, this album will introduce you to so many other people's work. For me, this album led to Johnny Cash, the Velvet Underground (and Lou Reed) , Elvis Presley and Muddy Waters. Thank you Nick.

Vienna

I myself being an Ultravox fan during the Midge Ure days and seeing the band at the hammy odeon this CD brought back memories. I forgot how good it was, I must say this is their peak of Creativity IMHO.
Love Astradyne for starters, But I cant single a track out for praise as there are all brilliant , even the Bonus tracks which I have as B Sides are great. I suppose Ultravox will always be remembered for Vienna and that Video of course. The other albums were good especially Rage in Eden, Not quite as good but almost.

...if you're a huge EC fan, you've got most of this material. However, there are a lot of new, eager, young fans out there, just discovering (or on the verge of discovering) some really good stuff from the late 70s. If I was one of those new, eager, young fans, I'd want to get my hands on a lot of the material very quickly - not just the usual album stuff, but the peripheral recordings that were being made at the time the albums were being made. This is a brilliant introduction. If you have all this stuff already, you don't have/need to buy it! If you don't have the stuff, and you're keen to learn... BUY IT! Probably, the best album EC ever made, with lots of extra material on top. But bear in mind you shouldn't overlook "My Aim is True", or "Get Happy". ... Read More:

;Someone once said to me that their favourite Cocteau Twins song was always the one they were listening to at the time which is pretty succinct and effective way of surmising how special this band are /were. Released in 1988 and coming after the sometimes airily wonderful collaboration with Harold Budd "The Moon and the Melodies" Blue Bell Knoll saw the band revert to their classic line up of Robin Guthrie (guitars and general grumpiness) Elizabeth Fraser( mercurial vocal gorgeousness) and Simon Raymonde ( bass and spectacular spiky haircut) though there is a feel of some programming having gone into this album (just listen to the skittish backing rhythms on the title track or "A Kissed Out Red Floatboat" )but there are also

After literally years of waiting, longing for this album to be issued on cd, I am delighted that Cherry Red have seen the light and obliged.A stunning set from an all-girl outfit, it still mystifies me how this band have slipped and remained under the radar for so long.Much is made of the post punk cannons of the Au Pairs, Kleenex and Girls at our Best, but the Mo-dettes were in my view just as good.White Mice and their inventive cover of Jagger/Richards Paint it Black are just two of many highlights and the thought of this great band being rediscovered by fans of quality music, is almost as welcome as tghe release itself!!

This is an album of two extreme styles: hard-driving guitar music that's clearly influenced by the punk rock of 1977, its year of release, and the icy, electronic soundscapes a few years ahead of their time. I remember the catchy, primal rhythm of 'Rockwrok' from the time of its release, together with John Foxx's Lydonesque sneer. The next two tracks follow suit and there's even a '1-2-3-4' opening to 'Fear In The Western World', yet 'The Frozen Ones' deceptively begins with some eerie keyboard. More bizarre is 'Distant Smile', which starts with two and a half minutes of Eno-like ambient piano before the band explode into life yet again.
They then seem to shake off the punk influence. 'The Man Who Dies Every Day' is an especially memorable song couched in an impassioned ... Read More:

The Fall's refusal to stay in one musical place for long has led to many good but few great records. Sometimes production lets them down, sometimes song choice and sometimes it's the performances. The Fall's more recent releases, for example, have included some fine music but occasionaly suffer (sorry Fall die-hards)at the hands of Mark E Smith. He may be the main driving force behind every Fall record but there's no getting away from the fact that sometimes his vocals sound like a Friday night drunk, reading his order off the menu at a Chinese takeaway. Then again, that may be the appeal to some listeners. And to be honest, like or loathe what they do you wouldn't change them and on most records they do manage one or two superb songs.
