Certainly a return to some sort of form after the string of lack luster albums from 1995 onwards! Again a shortfall of only 9 tracks, but there is no real weak tracks this time round. It's all about the music for me, and this it better sounding music with a lot less of the doggy sounds found on the awful Neon Lights or Cry. Track 2 and single Home sounds great even now, and secondly single Stranger is catchy. The only real weak moments of any note are the plodding re cooked Jeweller to the Stairs from Our Secrets are the Same, and the thudding keyboards of Different World, which can't make up which direction it wants to go in, but isn't a bad track all the same.
They still suffer from not having a variety of style's and a good ... Read More:

Excellent compilation though I have 1 gripe. Red Frame White Light, where is this track? For a compilation advertising itself as The OMD singles this is a striking ommision.

A classic LP, even if its a compilation, it doesn't matter. So for that fact its top marks.
But this CD, like Quiet Life, too many of the extra tracks are repeated in their vaguest form, yet 2 of the best tracks are not included. I'm talking the Steve Nye 12" remix of European Son and the Life In Tokyo (Theme), which where both radically different than say 3 versions of "All Tomorrows Parties" (on the Quiet Life CD).
With these 2 omissions across the whole range of the remaster, you are really missing out on what are 2 great tracks, especially the European Son Steve Nye version, as I count that as their best track ever.
A shame then that unless you track down the vinyl, you'll now never get to hear them ... Read More:

I have been buying music for over 30 years, have owned this album for nearly 20 and nothing comes close to maintaining the longevity of affection I have for this album.
For me it sets the benchmark for blokes with guitars, amps that go all the way up to 11 and a story to tell.

Finally it arrived! The best of Midge Ure and Ultravox on one CD packed with great songs such as "Vienna", "Dancing with tears in my eyes", "Hymn", "If I was", "Breath" and "Lament" which are among my favorites. Many compilations were released during the years either a best of Ultravox or Midge Ure and Ultravox together, but this one is simply the best. Do not hesitate to buy this CD if you are a fan like me. You will not regret it. The recording is superb, you can enjoy each of the songs with superior high quality sound. A MUST!

There are two glaringly obvious affectations to blame for the artistic failure of U2's `the Joshua Tree'. One is the record company, who MUST for the sake of their shareholders, send young provincial bands to the colonies, and the huge rewards from the eager masses there. The other is the Clash.
`London Calling' sent U2, and any number of other groups from the UK and beyond, scuttling for their cowboy boots and neckerchiefs in the mistaken belief that `they-could-take-on-American-influences-and-still-be-interesting....not so.
If you give young people in their 20's, lots of cash and put them on a plane to the heart of consumerism, they're gonna imbibe...and how. Within weeks they're adopting that ridiculous gait all rock groups must adopt when they're `conquering' ... Read More:

Having listened several times to this remaster the sound is really good and it's great to have the original album tracklisting reissued for the first time on CD (no "Situation" replacing either "Tuesday" or the very abstract "I Before E"). The latter track may not show off Alison's vocals in any way (but it does involve a couple of the crew's mothers speaking some very strange dialogue in each channel) but it BELONGED on the album, however difficult it was when compared to the rest of the tracks.
The release itself therefore merits 5 stars, but it would have been 6 if they could've kept a couple of bonuses (like the 12" of "Don't Go" and maybe the US "Situation" as of the same period), rather than purely releasing these on the completists 4 disc box set. But the released ... Read More:

My love of the stranglers has never died from the day I saw them live first in 1977, it was all great stuff and even the departure of Hugh could not deminsh my fire for them, Paul Roberts did well over the years giving some good showings on Stranglers in the night and About time, but there it stopped, Written in Red was a band lost and Coup De Grace showed that time had run out for Roberts, I skipped Norkfolk Coast even though the reviews raved on and on. Then came Suite 16, why did I buy it 9 months after its release I can't tell, but the first listen with a bottle of Jack Daniels late one night blew me away, this was the Stranglers I had missed for 16 years, the reason we all dress in black..
Spectre of Love lives along side the Stranglers great 45s of 77/78 and my other love is ... Read More:

Having just read the most recent review below, I felt I had to add my own tuppence worth. Having heard about them many years ago - I think Kurt Cobain may have dropped their name in some interview - they were one of those bands whose very name held a mystique, though in the pre-CD reissue and internet days, remember them?, it was a tricky proposition.
So seeing this box site for less than a tenner, I took the plunge and am now kicking myself for only now discovering the infectious delights of the YMG. Extremely spare and dry in presentation, the undersung vocals and 'feel' guitars are a blast of fresh air in these days of overwrought emoting. Give your ears a treat and get this box set. You have nothing to lose but your musical blinkers.

This album is full of the complex rhythms and quirky tunes mixed with admittedly bizarre lyrics to make something that works unusually well. If you have listened to a little Talking Heads or own a 'best of' compilation, I would highly recommend this as a must buy album on the way to becoming a full-blown fan. Very infectious!
