Ok so you may have bought Double Hipness, you may be lucky enough to have Popera and you may be asking yourself, 'does the world really need another Associates/Billy mackenzie anthology. The answer will always be yes as far as I am concerned.
Not everyone will have Popera, which was an earlier Associates retrospective that is now sadly unavailable, but 'singles' is a worthy replacement, where popera failed on poor sleeve notes, 'Singles' is a joy to behold, carefully, thoughtfully and lovingly put together. Sure there will be the pedantic souls out there that bemoan the single-edit nature of this track and that track, but that should only serve to feed the curiousity of anyone who hasn't got the original albums to go seek them out ... The Durutti Column have been furrowing their/his own furrow for two and a half decades now. Untroubled by the pressures of fame (as he says on his web site, he is unlikely to ever be seen on Top of the Pops) he has gone his own sweet way across a score or so of albums. His consistancy is remarkable, as is his invention. It is never easy plucking a best of from an ouvre this large, but Phil Cleaver has done a good job here. You can trace Vini Reilly's progress on this set, starting with the sparse Sketch for Summer, progressing through warmer sounds of The Missing Boy, the jazz(ish) workout of Without Mercy (2 extracts here, brilliant whatever Vini himself says), the elecro like LFO Mod, the return to roots Requiem Again, the wonderful vocals of Sing ... Back in 81, (before I was even born, I might add) Duran Duran were just 3 years away from world domination.
This, there first album, spawned hits such as "Planet Earth" and "Girls On Film" (Careless Memories was also released as a single, but stalled somewhat at a disappointing no 37)
It was however "Girls On Film" that shot the band to stardom, the now notorious video (Topless women etc) still receives airplay on music channels today.
Le Bon & co were every youung girls dream, young, fit & handsome. Duran Duran were everywhere.
Musically, Andy's guitar work was evident, Nick sync's played through strong and Le Bon's vocals were, well, average. (Lets be honest, he's never been the world's greatest singer)
The formula ... Read More:

Quite possibly the finest band out of Sheffield, Heaven 17 produced some fabulous tunes during hte 80's. This CD will give the uninitiated a good overview of the Band's work. One reason for getting this CD is the inclusion of the track "Foolish tHing to Do", some Heaven 17 fans will abhor this track but I've always thought it was one fo their best. So go ahead, take a trip back to the early 80's and use this as your soundtrack - there are worse things you could do!

Ludd Gang = "I hate the guts of Shakin' Stevens 4 what he has done/the massacre of blue xmas - on him I'd like to land one on!
'Perverted by Language' is one of the many very good Fall-albums, and a key one at that - coming on the heels of the patchy 'Room to Live' (also 1983) and the exit of Marc Riley/the arrival of Brix Smith. The ever present MES is joined by long-time accomplices Craig Scanlon & Steve Hanley alongside Paul Hanley (drums, electronics) and Karl Burns (drums, bass) - who has been a member of the Fall in the 70s, 80s and 90s. A glutton for punishment? 'Perverted by Language' saw the Fall briefly return to Rough Trade after the collapse of Kamera (where they recorded 'Hex Enduction Hour' ... Read More:

Staring at the Sea - The Singles
I bought this album in 1986 on cassette, and still play it occasionally today. The cassette version had most of the CD's tracks on the A-side, while the B-side had a whole side of unavailable B-sides, which have been reissued on the 'Join The Dots' compilation. Still worth buying as in introduction to the early work of The Cure, and worth buying just for
standout tracks such as 10:15 Saturday Night, Boys Don't Cry, A Forest, Charlotte Sometimes, and The Lovecats.

I bought the vinyl 2LP edition of this album and was very disappointed, not with the music which is superb, but the abject, poor pressing quality of my sample. Audiophile pressing? Give me a break. Certainly, this 2LP set was not pressed at Pallas in Germany or RTI in California or at any of the quality pressing facilities worldwide. It is such a shame that U2's music is treated so badly by Universal. Both of my discs were warped and Disc 1 was pressed off centre.
A word of warning also to prospective purchasers .. the vinyl formulation of these discs would appear not to conform with standard vinyl formulations as used in Europe, the USA or Japan. The point? You will not be able to 'flatten' and will actually damage this LP with any of the [expensive] vinyl ... Read More:

The Jam were without doubt one of the best if not the best band I have ever seen live. They played with an intensity which was by turns enthralling and shocking. I saw them live 5 times and I always came out the concert buzzing even when I was assaulted by a group of idiots (I left 2 worse off than me!) who were groping my girlfriend.
The music is played louder and badder than you will hear on the Jam's albums and this is evident in tracks such "Start" "Set the house ablaze" "Going Underground" and "Private Hell" but I like all the tracks on this album and it is refreshing that some of the tracks are not just single releases but in a way representative of the Jam as an albums band.
Great album and if I remember what those other 2 idiots look like they will get ... Read More:
