Having listened several times to this remaster the sound is really good and it's great to have the original album tracklisting reissued for the first time on CD (no "Situation" replacing either "Tuesday" or the very abstract "I Before E"). The latter track may not show off Alison's vocals in any way (but it does involve a couple of the crew's mothers speaking some very strange dialogue in each channel) but it BELONGED on the album, however difficult it was when compared to the rest of the tracks.
The release itself therefore merits 5 stars, but it would have been 6 if they could've kept a couple of bonuses (like the 12" of "Don't Go" and maybe the US "Situation" as of the same period), rather than purely releasing these on the completists ... Read More:

I bought this when it originally came out on cassette. It must be one of my most played albums ever. I cant quite see why the comparisons between this and the debut album have to polarise opinion so much. Personally I love the melody and the lyrics on this album whilst the buzz saw guitars are still a prescence if more accessible than on PyscoCandy. And I really did 'live my life in black' back then though the album is still contempary and has survived the years well.

I must admit I thought I would have to defend this album, at the time it was not treated maybe as kindly as it deserved. ZZ Top hit the nail on the head so well with the early 1980's album Eliminator it was always going to be seriously hard to follow.
I'm really pleased to see the other reviewers seeing this album for its worth.
The fact the Eliminator car has evolved on the cover is no accident. This album evolved in 1980's style to a more synth space age feel. This album has a few weaker tracks but in all it's a great time peace in 1980's metal. The guitars are more fuzzy than Eliminator and the electro drums add to the feel of the time.
Sleeping Bag. This is a well chosen album opener; I love the chops the rhythmic ... Read More:

Twenty years in the making, The Boomtown Rats finally get the retrospective they deserve. The first Irish band to make number one, the biggest selling singles band in the UK from 1978-1979, and led by the charismatic Bob Geldof.
Most familiar to all will be Rat Trap and I Don't Like Mondays, the two number one singles that were sandwiched between the Grease phenomenon and the advent of the Police. For a short period, The Boomtown Rats, and in particular, Geldof and Paula Yates, were foremost in the nation's consciousness.
Before this came some great songs such as Joey's on the Street Again, Looking After Number One, Mary of the Fourth Form, She's So Modern and Like Clockwork, which gave the Rats their early chart success, developing ... Read More:
'The Buggles', like so many groups that had just one major hit, probably made a mistake in the choosing of their follow-up single which was not so powerful. However, three Top 40 hits to your name in such a short period of time can not be bad!
This includes the extended version of their massive number one classic from 1979: 'Video killed The Radio Star' and just seven other songs which leads to a comparatively short and average pop album.

Foxx punk! yes the Matamatic man himself rocking, boy this rocks! Don't judge on the musical releases from 1979/80/81 on this album. Johns path eventually went electonic and he ditched the high energy punk which gradually phased into the final utravox album "Systems of Romance" and a "glimmer" in johns words of things to come.

I rank Paul Weller at the same level as Lennon/McCartney and David/Bacharach as a composer. This box set captures almost all his work with The Style Council who, along with the Smiths, were the greatest band of the 1980s.
However it is not quite complete because it misses some great songs and in particular My Very Good Friend found on "Here's Some That Got Away". That album is a must buy.

Ok, I'll admit it, I love A-Ha, even now. This album was released when I was about 5 and my sister, 5 years older than me, had this on cassette and I can remember we both played it to death, with the result that listening to it now conjures up some really lovely memories of my childhood. But anyway.....yes, there are some undoubtedly cheesy 80s songs on here such as (which I think has been mentioned before) 'The Blue Sky' and 'Love is Reason' but even now, the classics such as 'Take on Me' and 'The Sun Always Shines on TV' still bring a tingle to the spine because they have been really well produced and there is a great use of synthesisers in there (do I detect a Fairlight in there somewhere - ultra ultra expensive early sampling synth with a really unusual sound, used by Art of Noise a lot). When compared ... Read More:

A classic LP, even if its a compilation, it doesn't matter. So for that fact its top marks.
But this CD, like Quiet Life, too many of the extra tracks are repeated in their vaguest form, yet 2 of the best tracks are not included. I'm talking the Steve Nye 12" remix of European Son and the Life In Tokyo (Theme), which where both radically different than say 3 versions of "All Tomorrows Parties" (on the Quiet Life CD).
With these 2 omissions across the whole range of the remaster, you are really missing out on what are 2 great tracks, especially the European Son Steve Nye version, as I count that as their best track ever.
A shame then that unless you track down the vinyl, you'll now never get to hear them again, as I can't see Hansa (or Virgin) doing any more repacking ... Read More:
