The second Public Image Ltd (or PiL) album is at once a challenging, difficult yet mesmerising work; often seen as the absolute pinnacle of the post-punk movement, it's certainly not the most accessible example of what I personally think was the most exciting, creative, fluid era in all of 20th century's music. I loved the 80s. Born early 70s, I was at secondary school during the 80s and loved all of this music. All the tracks are listed in the product detail so there isn't much to say about what's on the CD except I'm sure there's plenty of others that we all thought equally as fab that could've gone on. In fact, I think if they hadn't duplicated some artists then this would've been an idea. Because the tracks are all the original artist and it's a collection of previously recorded hits there isn't anything to comment on the type of music. The packaging is 3 CDs in their own separate case inside a slip box. My personal preference was for CD1 but CD2 is just as good. This enhanced version of the classic 1979 synth-rock album confirms Gary Numan's originality and innovative vision. Musically, Kraftwerk must have been a model, whilst thematically, David Bowie's work like Diamond Dogs and Alladinsane would have provided inspiration.

This type of synth music experienced a great flowering the next decade with groups like Eurythmics, OMD, Yaz(oo), The Human League and individual artists like Klaus Nomi. Although Bowie's Low and Suicide's debut album both appeared in 1977, Numan deserves the credit for bringing this genre into the mainstream.

Greatest Hits of the 80's

This is the best ever 80s collection, For the amount of songs you can get for about more or less 10 pounds, you get plenty of value for money. Combined together with the second volume, the collection becomes even better.
Some of the songs may not be familiar to UK listener as they may be predominantly American hit singles and vice versa. The only reason why I give this collection 4.5 stars is that it doesn't includes lyrics, liner notes or even chart positions but maybe that would be too much to ask for.However, I don't know why relax by FGTH is repeated in both collections which is a waste of money. What sets this extensive triple disc set apart from most 80's compilations is that we are spared some of the ubiquitous songs that appear on virtually every compilation from that decade.
As the title implies the emphasis here is on electric/ New Romantic music which people believe dominated that decade. Well just as punk didn't actually dominate the charts in 76/77 nor did rock n roll rule the charts in the late 50's, this kind of music wasn't actually all over the charts in the 80's. Many of these tracks are quite obscure, or are by one hit wonders, and none of the tracks are later than 1986; whereas several actually date from 1979, so it was strictly a first half of the 80's style anyway.

Its 12 or 13 years ago now since I bought this album but its one I keep coming back to. It was my introduction to the Jam. I'd gotten into Weller in the Wildwood era and vaguely new something about the jam and him being in the band. It was about the time I was becoming obsessed with all things mod. My dad's old Who and Small Faces records used to go on every day after school. Then I heard Live Jam! Wow! The power, the aggression, the sheer energy coupled with Weller's musical genious had me hooked right away. All these years later and The Jam and The Style Council are still two of my favourite bands.
Buy it!

This magnificent album combines the wonderful talents of Burt Bacharach and Elvis Costello together to create something completely unique. Sure from the opening notes its clear who has had a bigger influence on the music (Bacharach) but Costello's input both lyrically and in some fantastic vocal performances is not to down-played.

Bacharach's background as one one of the finest popular songwriters needs no introduction. However the journey that Costello has taken from 70's new-wave angry young man to frankly all-round musical chameleon is amazing. He's now married to a Jazz Pianist, reads music and has written his own classical music - including the score! High Land Hard Rain

Roddy Frame has released some excellent albums and singles over the years, but this little masterpiece may well be his career highlight - all the more amazing when you consider that he was only 19 when the album was released.

It still sounds great today - minor quibbles over some dated 1980s production touches aside - and heralded the arrival of one of the most literate and thoughtful songwriters of the post punk period. Frame's remarkable maturity and guitar virtuosity appear to best effect on the highlights - Oblivious, We Could Send Letters and, best of all, Walk Out to Winter - but the rest of the album suffers little in comparison.

A great purchase - and one you'll always want to dip into.

When I first bought this album in 1983 I was struck by how unmemorable the songs were. Don't misunderstand me - I loved hearing the album but it was the uncatchiest record I had ever heard, apart from the two obvious singles, Back Of Love and The Cutter, which still sound superb and fresh in 2008. The Bunnymen had expanded their instrumentation beyond the basic guitar, bass and drums set up and this is captured brilliantly in the production. There's a clarity, edginess and impact to the recording which in later years was lost, never to return.

Ian's vocals soared and dived, Pete and Les were as solid as ever on drums and bass and Will's guitar alternated between soft and crashing. I love the acoustic opening of Heads Will Roll, followed by loud electric guitar and strings. Ripeness is a ... Read More:
