Great Album But Where's Rude Boys Outta(Version) Jail And Braggin' And Trying Not To Lie? Two Great Songs Missing From One Great Album, Worth Looking Elsewhere With Whole Album Intact In My Opinion.
Release Date January 23, 1995
Is there a less appealing musical term than `white funk'? The phrase conjures up any number of appalling possibilities, but that's exactly what `Entertainment!' is. And it's a fantastic album - perhaps the definitive post-punk LP.
Musically, `Entertainment!' melds elements of punk, funk, rock, and dub. The bass sound is much more prominent than in most `white' albums of the time to create a curiously uptight, precisely-drilled form of punk/funk - a long way from the seemingly loose-limbed sound of Black America patented by James Brown.
Lyrically, the album is fascinating. Could any other album give a critique on the Marxist concept of alienated labour (as `Entertainment!' does in `Natural's Not In It') and remain so listenable? ... Read More:
Dare is one of the most memorable albums of the synth-pop genre of the late 70s and early 80s, in the company of masterpieces like Architecture & Morality by OMD, Sweet Dreams by Eurythmics and Upstairs at Eric's by Yaz(oo). True, Gary Numan had conquered the charts by synthesizer in 1979 but his was a darker vision and more properly called synth-rock, just like the Human League's first two albums of dark eerie music: Reproduction and Travelogue.
This 3rd album, however, is pure brilliant pop created by synths and syndrums. The songs are catchy, tuneful and emotionally profound, which is why this album has remained such a timeless treasure. The Things That Dreams Are Made Of, Love Action (I Believe In Love), Don't You Want Me and the ... Read More:

I first heard this band via a John Peel session in '79 or '80 and quickly became a rabid fan. I still have every vinyl release they made. Excellent singing (John Peel voted Barbara Gogan best female singer in a year end poll), strong tuneful songs, very good dreamy guitar work - a perfect marriage of post-punk angst and pop perfection. Great to see it finally on CD - and this is a well put together compilation as it also hoovers up all the contemporary b-sides which are as strong as anything on the album proper.

I can but echo many of the comments above -- this is one of THE albums of the 80s. From the moment your CD drawer shuts to the moment it opens again 45 minutes later, there is simply not a single duff moment. Personal favourites are the exhuberant title track, the dark and positively spooky Chauffeur (I am listening to this track on headphones as I write this, and the hairs are all standing up on my arms!), the glorious 6th-form-disco-slow-dance classic Save A Prayer, and -- possibly my favourite Duran track of all time -- the truly brilliant Last Chance On The Stairway.
Oh, and whoever said that the bass is over-prominent obviously needs new ears -- the bass makes this album. Just listen to the bassline on Rio and tell me it ain't so. This album is John Taylor's tour ... Read More:

This is a fantastic complete collection of the fantastic 80's syntheseiser duo Yazoo (Alison Moyet and Vince Clarke). It contains both of their albums, Upstairs At Eric's (No. 2 in 1982) and You And Me Both (No. 1 in 1983) and a third CD of A-B Sides and 12" Remixes and a DVD of both the albums in 5.1 Mix, Promotional Videos, A Short Film and Yazoo At The BBC.
It contains the classic "Only You" which made No. 2 in the charts in April 1982 and my favourite track of theirs "The Other Side Of Love" which made No. 13 in November 1982. The 7" and 12" mixes are on CD3 of this collection as it did not appear on either albums.
If you are a fan of the 80's then this is a must buy for your collection, you won't be disappointed. This is a fantastic value for money ... Read More:

why? Yet another compilation album. Make no mistake, the compilation album is dying. Anyone with iTunes can make their own compilation in 5 minutes, and they are inevitably better than things like this - I certainly have.
It's a cheap, tacky cash-in. And it's not as if there haven't been a few of those already : 1985's "Singles", 1998's "Singles 86>98", 2004's "The Remixes 81-04", a lacklustre and boring reissue programme of every studio album they've recorded, 50 live albums ... ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
If you don't have anything by Depeche Mode, and don't care if the songs are in any chronological order, sure, you can buy this : it has less than half of their hit singles in random order, which present a bizarre uneven listening experience. New track "Martyr" is excellent ... Read More:

This is a superb collection of Police singles, from the early days of Roxanne and Can't Stand Losing You - both of which were considered controversial songs because of their subject matter. The Police very successfully integrated reggae rhythms into their sound, as demonstrated by the aforementioned and by later smashes like Message In A Bottle and Don't Stand So Close To Me. My other favourites include Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, Spirits In The Material World and Every Breath You Take. Not everything here has stood the test of time well - De Do Do Do is one those irritating novelty numbers that I skip when listening to this album. These songs, although mostly simple and catchy, are a cut above simple pop because of their clever lyrics that often contain a twist or two, innovative rhythmic ... Read More:
