one of the most imaginative and seminal bands of the 80's,tears for fears created many near perfect electro pop records that have stood the test of time,its not often a duo who play fantastic music also has two outstanding vocalists aswell.its just a damn shame that it took gary jules's pretentious,awful cover of mad world to make people remember them.apart from depeche mode,pet shop boys and erasure tears for fears were the best of that scene.buy this now!

Talk Talk started out in the early 80's as left field alternatives to the likes of Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet before eventually evolving into something far more interesting. Frontman and songwriter Mark Hollis always had his sights set higher than the synth pop of early hits 'Talk Talk' and 'It's My Life' and with this, the bands third album, he finally managed to achieve the critical success he sought.
The Colour Of Spring is a very English, dense, pastoral record where jazzy passages are followed by stomping piano driven singles, startling melodic invention is everyhere and whispered vocals slip in and out of the mix.

I first saw the Thompson Twins in 1981 or '82 (not really sure now!) after the release of their second album, "Set", and the moderate success of the "In The Name of Love" single, when the stage seemed to be overflowing with musicians. Fast forward to early 1983 (I think) and a free gig in Hitchin for the BBC's 'Live in Concert' (I had the video of the broadcast of that concert for years - and yes, you can see me!!), and that mass of band members had been reduced to just three!! And although I knew their sound was changing I was completely amazed and bowled over by the music they created that evening - songs that I would get to know really well a short while later through "Quick Step & Side Kick".

The Definitive Collection

As pointed out by previous customers, the track listing in this cd is basically the same as the one in the previous collection "Level Best".
"Why bother, then?", you might ask. I'll tell you why. The songs have been (as you'd expect) beautifully remastered, and sound like they never did.
I already owned "Level Best", but I'm surely glad I purchased this one too.
I mean, just listen to that bass pumping...

Lyrically and musically, this is Ultravox at their peak, IMHO.

Midge Ure & Chris Cross finally put down some lyrics that make you think 'that's what I'm feeling too'. White China looks forward to the return of Hong Kong to China, One Small Day celebrates the little victories we all have, Dancing with Tears in my Eyes describes the terror a nuclear war would bring, whilst Lament moves with simplicity. Man Of Two Worlds is inspired by the rugged Scottish heartlands and the battles fought with the English. Heart of the Country speaks of betrayal by the motherland. When the Time Comes is a defiant end of a love affair lyric, whilst A Friend I Call Desire accurately moves through the affect of desire on a relationship.

I remember this album being released and being rated only 1* material by Robin Smith in the Record Mirror - it is sadly lacking in objectivity to allow a heavy metal enthusiast to review an album overflowing with electrosynth melody and classical overtones. From the moment that you first flip this disc, you are onto a winner. Reap The Wild Wind was the show opener on the 'Monument' tour and is a fitting start to this album. Despite being only an album track, 'Serenade' is certainly my favourite song on this LP - accomplished and catchy - play it to your kids and they will demand piano lessons. The guitar riffs in Mine For Life transport you back to the pre-Ure era and Hymn is a song to sing along to. Visions in Blue is technically the best work that Ultravox ever produced ... Read More:

Many things have been said about Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures, and yet so many things have been left unsaid or cannot be said. This is an another-worldly record, so of its time and yet transcending it; so shaped by the creaking, decrepit Britain of the late 1970s, new wave, Northern soul and yet pointing to timeless qualities.

I just remember when this album came out - and reading the generally positive review in Record Mirror at the time (hey, I was also reading NME and Sounds at the same time!) - in which they gave a fairly accurate description of the band, its sound and this album, giving it 7 out of 10, saying it was influenced by the Doors, and more '69 than '79.

The Lexicon Of Love

I have like previous reviewers of this album finally got around to replacing it on C D . My wife and I listened to it in the car on a long journey and it is still as good if not better now as it was more than a quarter of a century ago. It really has all been said from the vocals to the production even the cover of the album. I must agree that it is possibly the best album of the 1980`s. I guess Michael Jacksons Thriller and Fleetwood Macs Tango in the night would also be contenders but Lexicon of love truly is a timeless album and blows your mind everytime you hear it. That is the true test of any album if you are still enjoying it as much all these years later. A truly awesome album a must buy for any collection.

from the start, this was their introductory album,
right, an EP called irene and mavis contained the
prototype, but is not represented here..

if you've heard of blancmange, you have a pretty
good idea of what your getting, but if you've
only heard a few singles, you might be pleasantly
surprised to hear the rest of their work..

'living on the ceiling' is light years ahead of most
groups, and even of some of their other tracks..

'feel me' also has a very cool tone to it, that
starts out slow, but turns into a very passionate
plea...
