Part 2 of Merzbow's tribute to elephant seal Minazo certainly looks stunning, with this vinyl only release coming on bright splatter coloured vinyl with a heavy duty gatefold cover featuring artwork from Masami Akita. Unfortunately the actual music doesn't quite reach the heady heights of the brilliant `Minazo' CD - this is by no means a bad record, but it's one of the more anonymous harsh noise sessions by Merzbow, with nothing out of the ordinary to lift it beyond any of his previous hundreds of releases. Still - good harsh noise in a gorgeous package - nice to have but not as essential as `Minazo' part 1.

Half Machine Lip Moves/Alien Soundtracks

Put simply, "Half Machine Lip Moves" is one of the greatest 80s LPs out there - a fantastic, fatalistic, progpunk mesh of muffled spirit voices, reversed guitar feedback, clattering drums & strangled, reptilian synths. It's all the dark stuff Tubeway Army put to one side before recording "Replicas" basically - an agitated, intense ride into the Lynchian underbelly of sunken-eyed Futurist rock - & it still sounds BRILLIANT. "Alien Soundtracks" isn't quite as good but better that than 40 mins of empty CD. Buy or die.
