As with most Merzbow albums Dharma is chiefly built from textured noise. This album is mostly in his psychedelic noise blanket mode, with subtle edits and buried loops rather than pummelling contrasts and jumps. Small sections of disjointed atonal piano act as a contrast, similar in effect to the prog rock snippets on Aqua Necromancer, though the feel of the album is rather more mysterious. Many Merzbow records are made as direct homages to particular musicians or genres, but Dharma seems to be more concerned with nothingness, the void, (perhaps death) or at least the process of reaching out to it...Besides the hypnotic cycling sounds themselves there are the titles, with references to sound sources and emptiness: "Piano Space for Marimo ... Yet another SY album is out, and no noubt once again we'll hear the refrain 'back on top form' or 'best album since Daydream Nation' which seem to come with almost everything they put out.
Cutting to the chase, this is nothing new from Sonic Youth -- it's yet another refinement of the formula they had perfected by 1995's Washing Machine LP. It doesn't scale the heights of 97's 1000 Leaves either, but feels like a continuation of Murray Street. Murray Street was flawed, containing only three (or four, depending on your point of view) outstanding tracks from seven. In the weeks I've been listening to Nurse, there's only on track I skip -- '...Arthur Doyle Hand Cream.'
The album is a pastoral as 1000 Leaves was, yet has that ... Read More:

"This is everything that is wrong with the music industry". If you prefer to be told what to buy by NME magazine, then the quote is highly applicable. Personally, I love this album to death. It was the first of theirs I got and went on to get more. All hail drugged up rodents.

As a fan of experimental music, including noise, and having been impressed by Prurient's contribution to the split release with the excellent Kites I was keen to purchase more. But be warned 'Black Vase' is not for the faint hearted.
Many tracks feature distorted vocals and howling shards of noise, which is great if that's your thing. And Prurient create a fairly interesting layered sound that reveals itself with repeated listens. If you like Wolf Eyes then you should be quite happy with the majority of 'tunes' on offer here.
However, be careful about opening track 'Roman Shower'. I simply cannot listen to this as it consists of 15 muniutes of incredibly high pitched tones which, after years of musical pleasure, my ears cannot cope with. If Prurient's ... Read More:
