A thorough search of the web will reveal this CD to be one of Merzbow's best (along with "Spiral Honey") and most sought after albums. Each Merzbow release is different and what distinguishes "Oersted" is the use of tiny pockets of space punctuated with synthetic colour. I haven't come across this dynamic use of sporadic silence in other Merzbow releases that I've heard - usually the soundscapes are unrelenting as they morph their way along. The dynamic gating makes "Oersted" unique. It also employs the best of Merzbow's production - psychedelic burbles and bubbling glissandos as opposed to mere layers of fluctuating white noise. Excerpts of these LP's appeared on the 'Anorexic Sacrifice' single and the later 'Raining Milk' LP. This Dossier re-release appeared in both vinyl and CD formats. Significantly cheaper than the above referenced box but, alas, also out-of-print and difficult to find. Have not seen any release of these on the 'Touch & Go' label. Excerpts were later included in the Cleopatra issued 3-CD box which has also joined the ranks of out-of-print collectible. 'Gehenna Lion' is listed on a current greatest "hits" CD. Any and all are worth having.

Half Machine Lip Moves/Alien Soundtracks [VINYL]

Put simply, "Half Machine Lip Moves" is one of the greatest 80s LPs out there - a fantastic, fatalistic, progpunk mesh of muffled spirit voices, reversed guitar feedback, clattering drums & strangled, reptilian synths. It's all the dark stuff Tubeway Army put to one side before recording "Replicas" basically - an agitated, intense ride into the Lynchian underbelly of sunken-eyed Futurist rock - & it still sounds BRILLIANT. "Alien Soundtracks" isn't quite as good but better that than 40 mins of empty CD. Buy or die.
