I had never heard of soul called this name, "Northern Soul", until a guy on a radio show played some songs from this CD and I was hooked. I had never heard of most of these artists either (only being born in 1968 and living in Canada). I absolutely love this CD. The music is simply fabulous. Granted, not all songs are as good as others, yet any song on here, and I mean ANY, is better than anything put out by artists today. My personal favorites on this compilation are 1) Dobie Gray - Out On The Floor, 2)Tony Clarke - Landslide, 3)Frank Wilson - Do I Love You (Indeed I Do), 4)Just Brothers - Sliced Tomatoes, 5)Ray Pollard - The Drifter, and what is quickly becoming my favorite (although not quite beating Landslide), 6)The Invitations - Ski ... While Gladys recorded some excellent music for various other record labels, particularly for Motown, she will be best remembered for her music of the mid-seventies with Buddha. This British budget compilation is drawn exclusively from the Buddha vaults.
The chart history of the group is confusing, not least because some records charted in America but not Britain when originally released, but charted in Britain when reissued. However, all the big hits in both countries are included here.
Midnight train to Georgia, I've got to use me imagination, Best thing that ever happened to me, Baby don't change your mind and the medley Try to remember / The way we were - each and every one of these are classics. Other great songs include ... Read More:

It is a great testament to the skill of the musicians, singers, writers, arrangers and producers of forty years ago that these Detroit production line models of disposable pop should now be awarded classic status and be so much in demand. This and its companion volume, lovingly compiled for the English market, is subtitled 20 Collectable Modernist Soul Classics and are the floor filling sounds that echoed and spinned inside the Mod clubs in the mid sixties, made by acts such as the Miracles, Martha and the Vandellas, the Contours, Eddie Holland, Marvin Gaye, the Marvelettes, the Temptations, Chris Clark and many more.
Northern Soul was something different, although there are overlaps. These are all highly contagious dance tracks, with ... Read More:

This CD collection of Northern Soul classics was first issued on RCA in 1976. The original vinyl version of this album is now a sought after collectors piece but for the curious, or the dedicated Northern fan with CD player in the new car, this is a must. My personal favourite is "What's it gonna be" by Susan Barrett, originally recorded by Dusty back in 1966, but every track is worth the cost of this CD. Do yourself a favour.
