You see no one (to my knowledge) has made a range of repro furnitur and called it Regency 2008 or knocked off a play in the style of the Bard of Avon and called it Shakespeare 2008.
Ian Levine has over the years made some very fine records (amongst some true dross). I'd guess about 1 in a 100 of the songs he's recorded are worthwhile for example Doris'Jones No Way Out, Tyrone Ashley's Looks like Love is here to stay. I'm simply asking him to stop exploiting the words Northern Soul.
By the way the Nat Augustine track on this cd is excellent.
Release Date June 28, 2004
This should not be allowed to be sold without the contents made clearer. This album DOES NOT contain original northern soul songs. Instead it contains very bad, cheap, re-recorded versions of the originals.
It is another example of a complete rip off, released to make some quick cash out of an unsuspecting consumer.
I just hope that nobody has ever bought this as a starter to northern soul, because if you heard this before hearing any northern soul, you would think northern soul was rubbish.
If you're new to Northern Soul, I recommend one of the After Hours compilations.

Really, really good collection, charting the Dells from the mid 60s thru to the early 80s.
Production values are very high though one or two of the 60s tracks are a little tinny or harsh sounding.
The early 60s stuff is well represented by the Northern stomper "Run for Cover" and ballads like "Always Together" which just drip soul and emotion from every word! Other highlights from disk 1 include the anti war mid tempo anthem "Does Anyone Know I'm Here?" with its pleading lead, the dated but fun sounding "Believe Me" and the classic "I Just Don't Know"
Disk 1 comes to an end with the Dells signature tune, a lovely ballad "Give Your Baby a Standing Ovation" and "Closer" a mid tempo gem, both from 1973.

Edwin Starr was picked up via the Ric Tic label which Motown acquired-probably to shut them up as they were copying them profusely.
This CD takes in the year before Starr's charttopper-WAR and his subsequent move to England.
Here he made a series of hits like HAPPY Radio

Full marks to the team at Kent/Ace for the packaging, clearly a labour of love, well researched and beautifully presented these guys are head and shoulders above the rest. The recordings...crystal clear, the music...the very foundation of great sixties soul.
Release Date May 27, 1997
In common with the other volumes in this series, this collection consists of rare tracks that didn't make any significant impression when they were released and have largely been forgotten. If you are a casual fan of sixties music just looking for hits, you should look elsewhere. You won't find them here. There are a few familiar names here, but their famous songs are not included.
Of all the names here, Dolly Parton and Doris Day would seem to be the most unlikely inclusions, not just on this volume but in the entire series. In fact, these particular tracks sit comfortably here.
The Dolly Parton recording, Don't drop out, is from 1966 and even I (a devoted Dolly fan) didn't know this track existed until I came across this collection. ... Read More:

This is a thorough trawl through the singles archive between 1962 and 1969 for the Chess group of labels, with particular reference to Billy Davis, who guided many of the acts successfully through the changing marketplace, and also had a close relationship with Motown. Most of the records were homegrown but some were bought in from small labels such as Barbara, Tuff, Katron and North Bay. Many of the tracks have never been available on CD and have sometimes been chosen in preference to better known examples. Jo Ann Garrett's A Whole New Plan, produced by husband Andre Williams, was chosen over the A-side Stay By My Side, and the Kolettes (thought to be the Soul Sisters moonlighting) are also represented by a B-side. Sugar Pie De Santo wrote She's ... Read More:

You can guarantee Denise has an incredible voice that can realy carry a tune. I was not dissapointed with this album and am looking for more music recorded by this artist.
