This cd took me a while to get into but when I finally did get into it its fantastic! Its that good this is my second copy. A must for any northern soul lover.
Release Date February 26, 2008
This CD accompanies Mike Ritsons book of the same name and is just as good. Containing such such gems as Rose Batistes - Hit & Run, Sandi Sheldons - You're gonna make me love you, plus a whole host more, this CD has it all. If you want to know what all the fuss is about, well this CD will give you all the answers.

I bought this 3 Cd set because I wanted to regain some of the tracks I used to listen to and play as a DJ in Cleethorpes all those years ago.
Consequently, I am over the proverbial with CD1: Twine Time! The Fascinations! Jamo Thomas and the very clever I Spy for the FBI! Just about every track on this CD is a must.
And so to CD2....I'm a soul fan. I didn't buy this set as a Northern Soul fan. To me, the label is ludicrous, but I can't get too involved in my own personal stuff in this review.Suffice to say CD2 opens with Bok to Bach, Father's Angels, and I can see the crowds on the dancefloor doing that peculiar folksey, skipping hornpipe that superceded the pill-powered running up the walls and backflips of the earlier scene. For me, CD2 ... Read More:

I bought this one in 2001, more out of curiosity than anything else. Some of the tracks are brilliant - Flirtations / Nothing but a Heartache, Dave Berry / Picture Me Gone and Billie Davis / Billy Sunshine to name but three. This is how my interest in Northern Soul was sparked, even resulting in a two-hour radio show on a local Dublin station in 2005. Well recommended !

It is a great testament to the skill of the musicians, singers, writers, arrangers and producers of forty years ago that these Detroit production line models of disposable pop should now be awarded classic status and be so much in demand. This and its companion volume, lovingly compiled for the English market, is subtitled 20 Collectable Modernist Soul Classics and are the floor filling sounds that echoed and spinned inside the Mod clubs in the mid sixties, made by acts such as the Miracles, Martha and the Vandellas, the Contours, Eddie Holland, Marvin Gaye, the Marvelettes, the Temptations, Chris Clark and many more.
Northern Soul was something different, although there are overlaps. These are all highly contagious dance tracks, with clattery ... Read More:

Yes, we've all heard Dexys homage to the man - but how much do you know the music of the man himself ? Do you want to jump, hop, jive and bop till you sweat like you just don't care ?
This is the album to buy if you want to imagine yourself in Soho in 1968 -you've made it past the bouncers with your two-tone suit and your slim black knitted tie, but will the soul brother GIs down for the weekend from the US bases in Norfolk really accept you as you start to bop and clap to the infectious beat ? Basically, who cares - that's the message here - grab a babycham or a Watneys Red Barrel and enjoy this hot sweaty cellar of a CD. You're going to boogie till dawn, to the soulsound of bass, horn, sax and that funky, sexy, wunnerful guy called Geno Washington ... Read More:

1964 was a year of many one offs in Uptown Soul and Mitty Collier, whose reading of a Gospel song called I had a talk with my Lord was typical.
She even had an album issued called unfortunately Shades of a Genius though I believe that referred to Ray Charles, some of whose songs she covered.
I also believe I reviewed this CD months ago yet it never appeared-I think Amazon were having problems around then.
The hit probably sold more via the Dusty Springfield cover from her first album Everythings coming up Dusty.
And that was more or less her lot as the singles which followed only bubbled under if that.
After which Miss Collier-who was always pretty normal if you compared her to Etta James or Aretha Franklin- went back to the Church

With an opener like 'Out on the floor', you can't go wrong - a real scene setter for the 'good old days' of my youth. Apart from a couple of lyrically cringe-worthy tracks, the bulk of the album is chocca with old favourites, and as was habit of the day, winds up with 'Long after the night is all over'. How I miss those all-nighters! Would recommend to any Northern Soul fan who fancies a wander down memory lane.

The team at Kent continue to make available these gems from the past, some of which would otherwise never by heard by many fans of 60's soul. The tracks popularity, span the years from the early days of soul clubs right up to current favourites. Remarkable because after so many years most are new to cd and are great records. Excellent sleeve notes as usual. Long may it last.
