The fact that some of the tracks on these two albums have been sampled by hiphop acts, and/or turned up on various compilations have fuelled their cult status.
This double Cd couples Marlena Shaw's two albums for Cadet and throws in 10 extra tracks, including "Wade in the Water" and "Mercy, Mercy Mercy". It is a generous compilation and it is nicely packaged.
Of the two albums "The Spice of Life" is the best. It includes "Liberation Conversation" and the fantastic "Woman of the Ghetto" which have turned up on GTV's "Blaxploitation" compilations. This album is a follow up to the Kent Records high quality CD that accompanied the play of the same name. The first volume by Kent was genuinely one of the best Northern Soul CDs ever with a good track listing, high quality sound from the master tapes and an extensive booklet.

Listening to this as American pop music which preceeded and ran with the Beatles is to hear music which was exciting.In the UK there was no sort of dance craze thing and the Scaffold sent the whole thing up with Do the Albert Hall-which exorted the 2 people to stand in the middle of the floor and not move!
These sets are a great way of acquiring these tracks many of which were just of the moment when everyone cashed in to some extent. Like the Pastel 6 who were little more than a studio creation.
A few of these records ended up being heard in Liverpool and Let's Stomp was a favorite.So was Twist & Shout-the Beatles made it their own property!
