The Vibrations started in the doo-wop era but transitioned through the early 1960s soul-ballad style into a dance soul powerhouse in the mid to late 1960s. Although first on Chess Records they only had success there with the 'Watusi' novelty dance pop crossover and follow-ups. It was upon arriving at Chicago's 'Okeh Records' that their classic sides would be recorded.

There they recorded uptempo orchestral dance soul that would have thousands of British dancers stomping the crumbling dancehalls of the north and midlands throughout the 1970s and ever since. I bought this one in 2001, more out of curiosity than anything else. Some of the tracks are brilliant - Flirtations / Nothing but a Heartache, Dave Berry / Picture Me Gone and Billie Davis / Billy Sunshine to name but three. This is how my interest in Northern Soul was sparked, even resulting in a two-hour radio show on a local Dublin station in 2005. Well recommended !

What a pleasure to listen to a compilation album not filled with gimicky chart songs. What wonderful music - I have never heard any of these tracks what a great CD to play to friends and family and pretend that you were part of that club scene - Buy several copies as friends will want to take it from your CD collection.

This album is an amazing piece of soul artwork. Millie Jackson's vocals and the orchestral arrangements are a delight to the ears. Muscle Shoals have a lot to answer for when it comes to sending R&B music lovers into rapture. Just consider another outstanding genius (Bobby Womack) and his association with Muscle Shoals. I was truley blessed in being able to witness this album in its original era as a teenager. Almost every track on this album is sensual, deep and meaningful. When I play this album in my own privacy it is like recieving a musical massage. Musicians and vocalist who bring us such pleasures such as this album deserve great rewards. True R&B lovers please buy this album, you will guard it with your life.

This is one of my current favourite discs at the moment.First track sets the standard Eddie Whitehead,JUST YOUR FOOL, what a voice, the mans got soul down to his socks .If you dont Know this track the albums worth buying for this track alone.Track 3 is the imaginations version of Strange Neighborhood good record but not as good as Dean Parish's version.Track 6 is another belter by the Millionaires, AND THE RAINS CAME,. There isn't a bad track on this disc.As with all Kent records well recorded. Tracks compiled by Adrian Croesdell this man has got an encyclopaedic Knowledge of all things soulful but more then that he has great taste in music. Oh yes and he whites great sleave notes. In short if you love Northern Soul you will love this.

Great stuff - memorable songs, great group harmonies & Curtis Mayfield on lead! What more could any real soul fan ask for?

Good production, esp. allowing for the age of most of the recordings with some 'message' music that's still topical today.

Stand out tracks include:

Gypsy Woman - slowish but really melodic

I'm The One Who Loves You - more up tempo & catchy as anything

It's Alright - great song, uptempo, positive lyrics, great use of the horns

I'm So Proud - slower pace, very catchy song

Amen - almost gospel like, really catchy chorus

People Get Ready - theres a train coming! Manages to be a message song thats also catchy as hell

Amazing how much stuff the TM labels recorded and then dumped in the vaults! Were they doing it for a bet?.
Fortunately the CD Age came about and there was no reason to keep so much stuff hidden.
But their logics are more difficult to comprehend.They sign up a 9 year old girl Lisa Lewis whose mother was one of the Lewis Sisters.I mean great to revive the idea of the Hot Boppin' Girl but why not run with it?
TM were into signing up ex band singers like Billy Eckstine and Connie Haines.They signed up Sammy Davis Jr and they even signed up Pat Boone who cut 2 albums for their Melody sub.
Obviously aimed at collectors but so much here is better than some of what became the hits to my mind
