I've just given this a first-listen on the way to work having received it in the post this morning, having only ordered it yesterday (well done Amazon). It's fantastic. It's one of those cds that just make you want to spin round and round on the dance floor. I'm sure London Lee recommended it a month or so ago (http://www.londonlee.com/blog.html). It's a first rate Northern compilation, with out the obvious heard-them-on-every-cd choices.

Amazing how much stuff the TM labels recorded and then dumped in the vaults! Were they doing it for a bet?.
Fortunately the CD Age came about and there was no reason to keep so much stuff hidden.
But their logics are more difficult to comprehend.They sign up a 9 year old girl Lisa Lewis whose mother was one of the Lewis Sisters.I mean great to revive the idea of the Hot Boppin' Girl but why not run with it?
TM were into signing up ex band singers like Billy Eckstine and Connie Haines.They signed up Sammy Davis Jr and they even signed up Pat Boone who cut 2 albums for their Melody sub.
Obviously aimed at collectors but so much here is better than some of what became the hits to my mind

Let me lay my cards on the table. I am a big fan of Ian Levine's productions. What has puzzled me for a long time is why more people don't share my view. I hope, as I have hoped before, that this latest release will set right a long-standing injustice. With 70 tracks covering his four decades of record production, who can fail to be tempted by such a sweet and soulful compilation. Most of the career highlights are there -Billy Griffin (Technicolour), Johnny Bristol (Man Up in the Sky), Evelyn Thomas (Weak Spot), LJ Johnson (You're Magic Put a Spell on Me) etc. Also a selection of the best tracks from his recent Centre City releases - Gerod Harris (Headaches and Heartaches), Angelo Starr (Stand on my Own Two Feet) and Nat Augustin (Love is My Sanctuary) ... So what's this all about-Motown spending huge amounts of money then shovelling the results into the vaults where it would remain for 40 years!
How do these "experts" know what the public will buy? After all it was only through the Beatles that TM took off in the U K.
It must have made the artists wonder what they'd done wrong!
Especially Gladys Knight who was already seeing all her Fury and Vee Jay things reissued on LP.Then TM issue her cover of The Nitty Gritty-hardly essential really as Shirley Ellis had cornered the market with this one.
Interesting though the way T M covered their own songs with their own artists but through the years the CD Age has seen a mass amount of the music using any excuse to reissue it and then repeating ... Read More:

Great stuff - memorable songs, great group harmonies & Curtis Mayfield on lead! What more could any real soul fan ask for?

Good production, esp. allowing for the age of most of the recordings with some 'message' music that's still topical today.

Stand out tracks include:

Gypsy Woman - slowish but really melodic

I'm The One Who Loves You - more up tempo & catchy as anything

It's Alright - great song, uptempo, positive lyrics, great use of the horns

I'm So Proud - slower pace, very catchy song

Amen - almost gospel like, really catchy chorus

People Get Ready - theres a train coming! Manages to be a message song thats also catchy as hell
