Can't really top the previous reviewer, that guy obviously knows his stuff. However I can offer a review as a non-northern soul fan. I love sixties music, and motown soul in particular and there's nothing better than discovering great tracks that might have passed you by. The problem with northern soul music is that often its there for its rarity and not the quality. Even worse is the fact that the majority of post-sixties northern soul songs are absolute stinkers- horrible wannabe disco songs without any real soul or beat. Luckily this great collection is more sixties motown than shoddy northern soul, and even the 70's tracks (I ain't going nowhere by Junior Walker and Gladys Knight's No One Could Love You More) are absolute corkers. It should really be called The Uncollected and a few which have been.
The only way you even know some of these songs is if you buy this album.
The Essential...should include Twistin' Postman,Beechwood 45789,Playboy,Too many fish in the sea for starters.
This last named was to my mind their finest hour-it was beautifully copied note for note by Nella Dodds on the Wand label as A Girl's Life.
Which happens to be the title of the CD of her complete works

Unlike a lot of Northern Soul compilations this CD is packed full of great tunes. There are probably only 2 tracks that i don't actually like and amongst the rest there are some absolute classics. The Ray Pollard - It's a sad thing track, is worth the price of the CD on it's own if you haven't already got it. I did have quite a few of the tracks already but if you don't have a copy of Homer Banks - 60 minutes of your love then you really should take a long hard look at yourself in the mirror. I don't think i could ever get tired of listening to Jerry Cook's version of I hurt on the other side either.

I haven't stopped playing this CD since i got it and I've ordered the rest of the series on the strength of this one.

Superb.

This is one of my current favourite discs at the moment.First track sets the standard Eddie Whitehead,JUST YOUR FOOL, what a voice, the mans got soul down to his socks .If you dont Know this track the albums worth buying for this track alone.Track 3 is the imaginations version of Strange Neighborhood good record but not as good as Dean Parish's version.Track 6 is another belter by the Millionaires, AND THE RAINS CAME,. There isn't a bad track on this disc.As with all Kent records well recorded. Tracks compiled by Adrian Croesdell this man has got an encyclopaedic Knowledge of all things soulful but more then that he has great taste in music. Oh yes and he whites great sleave notes. In short if you love Northern Soul you will love this.

I bought this before I started dabbling in the Northern Soul scene (I'd heard of The Wigan Casino but that was the extent of my knowledge of Northern) - always liked beat driven soul (a la Freda Payne's "Band of Gold") - how could you go wrong with a CD with "Floorstompers" in the title? Quite easily as it happens. Gave this album periodic listens but it certainly didn't live up to my expectations of floorstomping soul. After getting into the scene more and attending Northern nights and more importantly having the odd dance, my whole perspective changed - I now get great enjoyment from this CD and appreciate tracks that before I wouldn't have listened to.

Simply fantastic, tracks 1 - 19 range from very good to brilliant. Tracks 20 & 21 are from his recording days at 'Epic' and are average at best.
(I've given it 5 Stars because R.H was a genius, really its 4.5 stars)
