I've just given this a first-listen on the way to work having received it in the post this morning, having only ordered it yesterday (well done Amazon). It's fantastic. It's one of those cds that just make you want to spin round and round on the dance floor. I'm sure London Lee recommended it a month or so ago (http://www.londonlee.com/blog.html). It's a first rate Northern compilation, with out the obvious heard-them-on-every-cd choices.

Only got this cd because it appeared in my Amazon recommendations. Despite being a great American popular 60's music fan, since starting collecting 'records'in that time, I hadn't heard of Derek Martin, but I have loved much other material produced by Teddy Randazzo.
I have just played this cd for the first time - WOW!!! It's been put straight back on again and I've been moved to make my first review for you.
It has brought back such wonderful memories of that era - when I had to trust a reviewer to find music which was rarely if ever played or even released in this country.
Great singing backed by REAL instruments with lovely arrangements.
Put's today's so called 'soul' music to shame.
Thanks Amazon for your helpful ... Read More:

Edwin Starr was picked up via the Ric Tic label which Motown acquired-probably to shut them up as they were copying them profusely.
This CD takes in the year before Starr's charttopper-WAR and his subsequent move to England.
Here he made a series of hits like HAPPY Radio

Soul did not come to us by a revolution, but it was an evolutionary process that took place somewhere between the end of the 1950s and the early years of the 1960s. In being evolution, therefor we might consider the Ace/Kent series Birth of Soul as the RnB equivalent of Charles Darwin's Origin of species. New artists take over the place of the established ones. A good example of this you find on this record. Soul as the major genre in popular Afro-american music took the place that Doo-wop previously hold. Therefor you will find on this record songs by Doo-wop artists as the Drifters who are (unsuccesfully) trying to adopt their own style to the new circumstances, and you will also hear Solomon Burke who steps out of the traditional gospel mode ... There are loads of great Soul singers, few if any rank alongside this guy.
A master of the slow ballad and the uptempo floor shaker, Mimms has it all, this album is a great place to start and to truly wonder at his majesty, I cannot rate him high enough.

Intresting compilation of 2 CD's disc one concentrates on the classic sound of N Soul in the mid 60's and Wigan anthems, highlights include Barbara Acklin's Am I the same girl, The Sapphires- Gotta have your love and The Superb Yum Yum's Gonna be a big thing.
Disc Two moves on post 70's and Blackpool's Mecca sound including Jimmy James- Hey Girl, and a knock out track from the great men themselves, Holland Dozier Holland - If you don't want to be in my life.
Side one just shades it for me, and this is a better compilation than Volume one in my estimation.
All in all not bad and recommended to fill in gaps in your collection and for the Holland Dozier Holland track.
