On this one CD are four of my favourite tracks of all time: Nancy Ames, Dana Valery, The Poppies, and Lynne Randell. If you know them you will probably agree. If you don't know them then you have a treat in store. There are many other five star tracks on this CD and very few less than good tracks. If this CD cost £100 it would be excellent value as it is these tracks will cost you just over 10p each. This is a pure guess but on original 7" vinyl I bet there wouldn't be change from £5,000 for the tracks on this CD.

well-assembled box set containing just some of Motown's most golden and definitive classics. Nobody knew Motown Records was going to take off in the way it did. Berry Gordy intended to use his artists to break down the then racial barriers, intending to encapsulate a golden and distinct sound that would not only please a black audience but would too appeal to whites. Berry Gordys visions for the company paid off. Key artists like Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder attracted a huge following from both blacks and whites.
Seemingly echoing the restrictions of ghetto life in Detroit (which is where Motown began) was the effective, bluesey Money (Thats What I Want) by Barret Strong, Motowns debut release. There ... Read More:

This is a simply brilliant collection. Obviously it has lots of Curtis & the Impressions on it (which is no bad thing) but it is much wider than this. It will have loads of people that you will have not heard of on it but the excellent 48 booklet gives lots of information on each track and gives hours of reading as you listen. It has a number of tracks on that I loved but had gone off my radar - the Flirtations "Girls are out to get you" has been played endlessly. Holly Maxwell "Suffer" & Jesse Anderson "I got a problem" are new to me but are great tracks. There are hidden gems on each of the CDs. In fact the whole of the first of the 3 CDs "Windy City Mixture " is probably worth the price of the set on its own.

at last this cracking little album is available on CD. This is Linda's best work - less poppy than other better known stuff.
Linda never got the recogntion she deserved in the 70's Her songwriting is
distinctive and her voice is amazing.

Every track on this CD is a total gem. Bert's Apple Crumble is probably my favourite, a particularly groovy instrumental that cannot fail to get you on the dancefloor. I am also starting a one woman Georgie Fame revival based on the brilliance of Somebody Stole My Thunder. There are tons of fanatastic songs on here, so I won't go into details. Needless to say, if you love to dance. If you love sixties music at its most cheesy and 'loungetastic' this is the album for you. I defy you to listen to this without having to get up and dance about every two minutes. In fact, roll back the carpet, turn up the volume and don't bother to sit down at all.

1964 was a year of many one offs in Uptown Soul and Mitty Collier, whose reading of a Gospel song called I had a talk with my Lord was typical.
She even had an album issued called unfortunately Shades of a Genius though I believe that referred to Ray Charles, some of whose songs she covered.
I also believe I reviewed this CD months ago yet it never appeared-I think Amazon were having problems around then.
The hit probably sold more via the Dusty Springfield cover from her first album Everythings coming up Dusty.
And that was more or less her lot as the singles which followed only bubbled under if that.
After which Miss Collier-who was always pretty normal if you compared her to Etta James or Aretha Franklin- went back ... Read More:
