Almost 15 years ago I bought a music compilation of music from the sixties that included Up on the roof, By Kenny Lynch, a singer I haven't heard of in my life. After listening to the CD I'm now reviewing, the question is why. Why is this singer so forgotten? This compilation of his hits from that magical decade (musically speaking, at least) is a perfect blend of great singing (What a beautiful, warm voice this man has!)with lovely arrangements that make it a superb example of the sound of the sixties. Up on the roof, Movin' away, What am I to you, and the covers (Miseery, Stand by me) are simply highlights among 24 really good songs. The sixties never cease to amaze me. Wonderful CD.
It's not Lavette herself: She has the quintessential R'n'B voice and knows how to use it.
It's not musicianship: The undercover Drive By Truckers are magnificent, and the drop-ins like Spooner Oldham and David Hood give the project some added kudos, too.
It's the songs: You have the lyrical muscle of DBT, including the Dirtroad Dylan himself, Mike Cooley, and the best song on the whole album is written by Elton John, who I'm afraid lost me shortly after Tumbleweed Connection.
Despite that it's a good record, but it most definitely ain't a great record.
You can feel it's good from the start as the guitars kick in with an irresistible ... Read More:

I bought this before I started dabbling in the Northern Soul scene (I'd heard of The Wigan Casino but that was the extent of my knowledge of Northern) - always liked beat driven soul (a la Freda Payne's "Band of Gold") - how could you go wrong with a CD with "Floorstompers" in the title? Quite easily as it happens. Gave this album periodic listens but it certainly didn't live up to my expectations of floorstomping soul. After getting into the scene more and attending Northern nights and more importantly having the odd dance, my whole perspective changed - I now get great enjoyment from this CD and appreciate tracks that before I wouldn't have listened to. If you're into the Northern scene this is a great budget buy, if you're looking for ... Read More:

Its not that this is a bad album, in fact there are some really warm and soulful performances. In fact that may be the problem for me. I was looking to replace some of my classic Dells tracks that I have on vinyl and tape. The old crackly ones with soaring, almost screeching vocals and layers of harmony to die for. These are different takes with a much warmer, rounder sound. They come across as if they are re-recordings and don't hit the mark in the same way. "Stay in my corner" is one of my most fave tracks but this is different to the single. the same with "Sing a rainbow" and "What a night" - they are not bad, just different. Hey for £3.33 buy it anyway, it is only the price of a pint of Stella afterall BUT just don't throw away those old singles ... Read More:

For the collector 7" Vinyl is the cornerstone for most people however these "After hours" compilations are great value and should not be ignored featuring some of the greatest tunes to emerge from the northern soul scene are featured on these compilations and along with them some of the most obscure unknowns. All in all a worthwhile comp if northern soul is your bag.

This excellently packaged and annotated CD proves that Chess Records wasn't just a great blues label. From the breakneck paced Twisted Wheel harmony soul floor fillers Hold On by The Radiants and Wear It On Our Face by The Dells to the subtle songwriting genius of Terry Callier and his awesome Look At Me Now, the jazzy Ramsey Lewis Trio tackling Wade In The Water to the sanctified Gospel Classics' More Love That's What We Need this CD is winners all the way. With rarities like Tommy and Cleve's Boo-Ga-Loo Baby appearing alongside Northern favourites like Tony Clarke's Wigan Casino monster Landslide, if you are a fan of quality soul music you need this!

Only got this cd because it appeared in my Amazon recommendations. Despite being a great American popular 60's music fan, since starting collecting 'records'in that time, I hadn't heard of Derek Martin, but I have loved much other material produced by Teddy Randazzo.
I have just played this cd for the first time - WOW!!! It's been put straight back on again and I've been moved to make my first review for you.
It has brought back such wonderful memories of that era - when I had to trust a reviewer to find music which was rarely if ever played or even released in this country.
Great singing backed by REAL instruments with lovely arrangements.
Put's today's so called 'soul' music to shame.
Thanks Amazon for your helpful recommendations ... Read More:
