On the crowded shelf of Billie Holiday "Best of"s a little guidance would be helpful, so here goes: You can roughly divide her career into 4 recording periods: 1. Columbia - 1935 - 1942, 2. Commodore mostly 1944, 3. Decca 1940s, 4. Verve 1950s. This "Best of" covers period 1 only, but what a period it was! The young Billie Holiday was the complete article right from her first recording. Her voice fits perfectly into the small groups at this time with musicians taken from some of the great swing bands of the day such as Artie Shaw, Teddy Wilson, Benny Goodman, Ben Webster, Buck Clayton, Freddie Green, Roy Eldridge and her most sympathetic collaborator Lester Young who christened her Lady Day. Sheer class! Unusually for a jazz singer, she doesn't ... Read More:

I've had this on vinyl since its release (1959?)and still play it after all these years. It demonstrates Darin's astonishing maturity at only 23 years old. His command of the audience, even audibly, ranks with many others who had been in the business many more years. Not up to Sinatra's abilities, but given time.... A truly masterful performance from a young, hip New York kid. It's worth buying for 'Some of these Days' (reprised at the end credits by Kevin Spacey in Beyond the Sea).

The album covers a period from 1962 to 1980 and includes some great old chestnuts like "The girl from Ipanema", "Summer Wind", his cover version of "Yesterday" and last but by no means least his unforgetable version of "Ol' Man River". This CD brings it all back-the French Bing Crosby, but with his own individual, inimitable style. "Je tire ma reverence", his 'signature song'is just the same rendering as on my old 78 record, but with a whole lot of other goodies besides. I hadn't heard Jean Sablon sing one or two of the songs he sings in English, as for instance, "Can I Forget You?" which is simply superb. This CD does a far better job than trying to use a CD-RW on your own. I would have given it five stars but for the one or two songs that were not exactly to my taste.
