This box set captures the most exciting, and revealing sounds, from the range of songs Sinatra recorded, throughout his "Capitol Records" years. His voice, now matured, guides you through many different emotions, with the clarity, and quality of this box sets recording, adding to the uniqueness of each song. Many a fan will argue that Frank Sinatra's Capitol Records years, was undoubtedly the best of his career, with his songs at that time having more depth and passion, than those same songs recorded under his Reprise contract. After the long and irratating introduction by Howard Cosell on track 1 (they could have fitted another song in instead) you soon realise that this is still a high class album.
After this poor start 'The Lady is a Tramp' and 'I Get A Kick Out of You' quickly rescue matters and show that Sinatra's voice was still in fine shape, if not quite as good as 10 or twenty years earlier. Hardly surprising though as he was approaching 60 when this recording was made. However that classic timbre and his marvellous phrasing compensate for any slight deterioation in his voice. This natural talent is undiminished and a always a joy to hear. The other part of this album thats great are the big band (Woody Herman) and the arrangements, which are ... Read More:

In this most unusual album, Sarah Vaughan conjures up images of after hours performances in smoke-filled clubs, where a few sad and lonely people nurse their drinks and listen to a solitary singer crooning softly. Here Vaughan sings "pure," without a big band behind her, without sharing the stage with a jazz superstar, and without any restrictions on her own interpretations. Accompanied only by a guitar (Mundell Lowe) and a bass (George Duvivier), both of which play quietly in the background, Vaughan turns in a remarkable performance, recording her most intimate album, one in which she makes the listener feel as if each song is sung for him/her and no one else.
Her famous versatility is on display here, but it is far more subtle than in ... Read More:

Classy album from '66, swingin and such and stretching into new material like Downtown and the title track. Ridiculous 27 minute playing time silly even in LP days - why couldn't Reprise issue these as 2LPs on 1CD in the manner of the EMI Dean Martin reissues.

I grew up a child of the 60's and for my generation Sinatra was sort of symbolic of everything that we were seeking to overturn. He was what my Nan and Grandad listened to. He wore a suit and cut his hair. And 'My Way' was the song of an old man at the end of his life.
Only when I got to University and having started listening to jazz of various kinds, did a friend of mine, who's tastes I generally respected, say "Here, you've got to listen to this". When I saw what he was putting on my eyes bulged in horror' but with the first few bars of 'Pennies from Heaven' I was bowled over, and it went on to become a firm favourite for our whole circle of friends. I watched the same process of horror turn to a huge grin several times more.
